Pit Bulls 101
I just don't have the energy for a GD Smackdown tonight, but I wanted to share. I thought I'd do so with my friends, here.

It takes a minute to load. It's worth it. Nothing nasty or ugly. Good stuff.

5. damn -
I didn't know. I just didn't know.

I admit to a prejudice against them. I mean - I KNEW it was more a question of the 'owner' - but I was still afraid. The f'ing media...

Thanks. Again. Still. You continue to do such good work. About a lot of things.

7. Except for the part about pit bull owners not being unsympathetic
to victims of attacks. When the beag was attacked, and many times since, I've been asked what she did to provoke it by people who simply can't believe it was unprovoked.

It was.

8. This, right here, is like saying
that Muslims are terrorists.

Okay, I'll buy in that your pup didn't provoke the dog. Okay. That STILL doesn't deserve a broadbrush of the breed.

I'm a pibble "owner" and I know a great many of them. We are sympathetic. Many of us are sympathetic in regards beyond the individual issue.

9. I know our experiences have been different, but the pit bull advocates I've known
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 10:46 PM by mycritters2
seem afraid to show sympathy for the victims, as if that reinforces the stereotype. Instead, they posit that my beagle (who was attacked from behind in a public park--while on leash) must be at fault. They see it as an either/or. Either my beagle is at fault, or their pit bull is. Well, can't be the pit bull, so that leaves one alternative. The VB was asking for it.

Indeed, I am asking that a broad brush not be applied. It cannot be true that every time a dog is attacked by a pit bull, it is the victim's fault. Those who care for pit bulls need to take responsibility when it's appropriate, in order to maintain credibility.

I mean, a dog who doesn't even chase cats probably wasn't itching for a fight with a pit bull.

And some help with the vet bill would have been nice, too.

On edit: And the hard fact is that if you attack or challenge the VB, verbally or physically, I become a mother bear in defending her. I've been surprised by it myself, but I've got a little instinct myself, as it turns out.

10. I'd never suggest that.
Which is why broad brushing the pitbull advocates isn't right.

Look, I'm the BIGGEST pitbull advocate you're going to find. I'm not even going to BEGIN to suggest that the beag was at fault or for any reason implicated.

Here's where we conquer. Don't lump the advocates together. It's about the dogs. Take each story/entry for what it's worth.

My point...I can give you 20 stories of pibbles that would be great with other dogs, cats, kids, etc. I can also give you 20 stories of dogs I wouldn't let within 100 yards of another dog, cat or kid.

It's the dog, not the breed.

You keep defending VB. You'd be letting everyone down if you didn't.

11. Thanks, friend. We still have a slight disagreement
I tend to think breed/gene traits are a stronger part of a dog's personality than I suspect you do. Comes from over a decade of trying to live with dogs who can smell things I can't even see. On this point we will have to agree to disagree. But thanks for your kind words.

Mess with the Vegan Beagle, and watch what happens :)

12. Hey, that's cool.
We'll keep each other on our toes in a positive way.

Siblings fight. Spouses fight. No sense in thinking that close DUers will fight too, right?
