Animal Cruelty Case Changes

OMAHA, Neb. -- Charges have been dropped against one of the suspects accused of sacrificing a cat just before Christmas.

Holly Perrigo, 24, is no longer facing animal cruelty charges.

Perrigo and 27-year-old John Rosen are accused of stabbing his cat with a sword, dissecting it, and storing its organs in containers for a religious ceremony.

Charges against Rosen have also been lessened to misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Mark Langan with the Nebraska Humane Society said the charges were changed because the Humane Society couldn't prove the two intended to torture the cat.

1. I cannot process this.
They tortured and killed a cat. The charges are lessened (or dropped) because it can't be proved that they intended to torture the cat?

What the heck is going on in Nebraska? What kind of craziness is that?

(Ugh, I hate this kind of story, but I appreciate your posts, Steve. Thanks for being here with us.)

2. Read this Ne needs LB 227

This was introduced by my Senator A. Cornett. Senator McGill co-introduced it.

Nebraska and its animals need your voice today! As you may know, barring appropriate sentencing upon conviction, animal abusers often commit additional crimes against humans and other animals. A piece of legislation that would help address this issue—Legislative Bill 227—was introduced in the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature. Please urge your state senator to do the right thing and support this bill.

If it becomes law, LB 227 will create the offense of intentional abandonment of an animal. Under current law, abandoning an animal only brings misdemeanor penalties; this bill would make it a felony offense to intentionally, knowingly, negligently, or recklessly abandon an animal if the animal suffers a serious injury or illness or dies as a result.

Please politely urge your state senator to support LB 227.

Please forward this message to others in Nebraska who might be willing to lend their voices to this important issue. The state's animals are counting on you.

Thank you for your compassion for animals and for your willingness to act.

Sincerely yours,

Dan Paden
