What do you do/want to do for a living?

Just curious as to the professions of the DU Vegetarians?

1. Believe it or not, I am a copy editor for an outdoors magazine

All the stories are about hunting and fishing and due to the nature of my job, I must read all of the stories word for word. I can deal with the fishing articles (because I still eat fish occasionally), but I have a problem with the first-hand graphic deer-hunting stories. But it is a job, and they are not easy to come by nowadays, so I am coping.

When I first started working here, I was not a vegetarian. But after reading all the deer-killing stories, I decided that I was never going to eat meat again. In fact, I had an online debate with a hunter and I stated how much I hated hunting. He said, "Well, you eat meat, don't you." And I replied, "Not anymore as of this moment."

2. College teacher

I usually tell my students I'm vegetarian at some point, too.

18. Now that's one of the most difficult

and underpaid professions in the world. I nearly went broke when I did it, but it was very rewarding in other ways. What subject doe you teach?

But my Ph.D. is in English literature. I guess I make less than others at my level of education, but I'm comfortable.

3. Health insurance.

I'm part of the Bush-loving corporate monster that is private health insurance.

As far as what I want to do, I'd prefer to live in a cabin in Alaska and never have to see another person as long as I live. But I haven't found many jobs that will pay you to do that.

I did get to work on one kids film that promoted wildlife conservation; "the Rescuers Down Under". Unfortunately, almost nobody saw it. :-(

9. Hey, I've seen it!!!

That's the one where Bernard is trying to pop the question, isn't it?? Me & my boys love that one! It helps having it about Australia, we have friends Down Under. :)

10. Yeah, actually, I worked on the scene

were he pops the question (at the end). The primary plot was about a boy trying to save a giant eagle who was the last of her kind, and a poacher (George C. Scott) intent on capturing the eagle and destoying her eggs so that she would be more rare, and thus more valuable. These days I wonder how many kids would be cheering for the poacher! :-(

11. I LOVE that movie!!!

As you said before, I am a big time Disney fan. But really, Recuers down Under is one of my absolute favorites...probably behind Beauty and the Beast. We watched it in first grade as a class :) Damn them, sneaking learning into fun.

12. Jake was my "special" character

I got to work on all of the characters in the film (last time we did that-it was fun, too) but I was the only one to work on Jake in my department in our East Coast studio. I liked his accent and his devil may care attitude. I worked on him with my friend Bridget...that was to be her last film. She died of cancer at the age of 33 the next year. Jake always makes me think of her and the good times we shared together.
