Dalai Lama Calls For End To Experiments On Animals

The Tampa Tribune

Published: June 14, 2007

With creatures great and small around him Wednesday, the Dalai Lama called for a halt to lab experiments on animals and made the case for eating only fruit and vegetables - all at the zoo of the late 'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin.

The spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhists delicately handled a Burmese python and petted a koala as he was feted like a rock star at Australia Zoo, speaking to a sold-out crowd of 5,000 at its open-air 'Crocoseum.'

'Hunting, beef, sheep farms, piggeries, millions, billions, die,' the Dalai Lama said. 'We can be so cruel to animals.'

Although he sometimes sparked laughter with his remarks, the Dalai Lama's 30-minute address also had a more serious note: He criticized companies and organizations that he said 'remain indifferent' to the rights of animals by experimenting on them.

It's far too early for me to even consider going near GD with this post. Maybe later.

1. Good, in fact excellent. If people only knew what some
"holy men" teach about eating animals after they've been terrorized and killed as well.

3. Not that I'm aware of.
Sorry, I can't call hypocrite on him. In the last few months, he's promoted vegetarianism and taken a stand against vivisection.

4. Here's an interesting editorial on the Dalai Lama and his meat-eating.
I think it makes a lot of good points, overall:

I really admire him.

5. I really admire him also.
I would love to see him convert, but, in my opinion, he's a person of integrity who deserves my respect and appreciation for the good that he does in the world.
