TAMPA - Tune in to an NFL game on a Sunday afternoon and chances are Michael Vick will appear on the screen, no matter the matchup on the field.
Since the day he was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, Vick has been among the league's most popular players. That has resulted in millions of dollars in endorsement deals with major corporations such as Nike and Coca-Cola.
In addition to the 10-year, $130 million contract he signed with the Falcons in 2004, Forbes magazine ranked Vick as the 19th-wealthiest pro athlete for 2005, bringing in an estimated $37.5 million.
<snip>
An indictment issued Tuesday in Virginia alleging Vick's involvement in a dogfighting circle and cruelty against the animals could end up costing Vick any more endorsement contracts, according to Marc Ganis, president of Chicago-based Sportscorp Ltd.
AND, this I didn't know:
The dogfighting accusation against Vick is the latest in a series of actions that have resulted in public relations hits for the 27-year-old native of Newport News, Va. In the past 18 months, Vick has settled a lawsuit by a woman who accused him of knowingly giving her herpes; made an obscene gesture toward Falcons fans as he walked off the field following a game in November; and, in January, was stopped by security screeners at Miami International Airport for having a water bottle with a hidden compartment that housed a dark substance.
