Help for new thyroidectomy patient

Hey all,

I had a full thyroidectomy on Tuesday of last week, to remove a possible cancerous nodule. The surgery itself wasn't so bad, it was outpatient, so I was home in my own bed by 4pm, with my mother taking excellent care of me.

The problem is now a week later, that my thyroid levels are, of course, non-existent. So the mood swings have gotten severe and the fatigue is coming back. I go to the dr tomorrow to get started on thyroid meds. My question is if anyone here is on thyroid meds, and if so, which one. Also, do you have any issues with it interfering with your other meds, vitamins, supplements, etc? How long did it take you to start feeling like yourself and for the meds to kick in?

Thyroxine, I believe is what she takes. Of course, because she's as odd as I am, the kind in the medicine cabinet here is the veterinary grade. It's far cheaper from what I can tell. As I recall, she hasn't had side effects of any kind, nor did it interfere with vitamins, etc.

When she first thought she had thyroid/metabolic issues, I suggested a good cycle of guggulsterones, which helped right away. I don't believe they'd help, as they're meant to stimulate the thyroid.

No questions asked! haha Luckily I currently have very good insurance, so mine will not be more then $10/month.

I fought having mine being removed for over a year, but the biopsy's didn't look right and it was interfering with my breathing when I laid down on my back, so it was time.

It is going to take a while for they meds to kick in from what I have read. I will look up the guggulsterones! Are these easy to come by?

3. Be sure to talk to your doc

before considering guggul products. I have NO idea how they'll interact.

They're very easy to find, and are a product in a good number of stand alone supplements, and in combination with other metabolic enhancers.

5. I don't have any thyroid advice, unfortunately.

But best of luck to you. Have you gotten your pathology results back yet?

7. I get them back today.

If they come back normal, I'll get my prescription. I hate the thought of taking meds for life, but I am bottoming out, and am ready to get back on an even keel.

6. For Mrs Robeson, she was hyperthyroid, so they gave her....

...radioactive medicine, which killed her thyroid. She bottomed out about 2 weeks after that, and they started her on medication, which took about 2 weeks before she started to feel "normal" again. They had to manipulate her dosage for about a year, before they got the right amount. She has been on synthroid, and is now on levoxyl. She has had no trouble with other drugs interacting with those.

Mrs Robeson wanted me to reiterate, that it is very important that you take your meds. It is a life-long thing, and something that will effect your entire body systems, so you HAVE to take your meds. It's been over 12 years now for her, and she's doing great.

I have been slightly hypo even before the surgery. I am hopeful that this finally get me back on an even keel! If path report is normal today, I'll get my prescription for meds.

I am happy to hear that Mrs Robeson was feeling normal after about 2 weeks. I can stand 2 more weeks!

Of course, my family tells me if I would just eat a little "protein" (meat in their world) I would feel SO MUCH better! :evilgrin:
