Brutal culture of US dog fighting
"Part of the psychology of dog fighting is the same as other forms of animal cruelty - a lot of it is about power and control," he said.

Add to this the dog fighter's identification with his animal in the ring - and desire to win "bragging rights" - and the scope for violence is great.

"The dog fighter sees his dog's victory as having a direct reflection on his strength and manliness, which I think is one of the reasons that we see brutal treatment of animals that don't perform well," Dr Lockwood said.

"The failure of the animal is seen as a personal failure, an embarrassment, and something where you need to prove your strength and dominance by getting even."

This is just part of this article about dog fighting in the USA and also Vick.

This type of PR is not doing the USA any good whatsoever.

Anyone that engages in these types of activities should face the maximum sentence possible, no ifs ands or buts about it!

Thoughts or comments? I feel so disgusted after reading this article. What the hell is wrong with people in our world anyway?

1. It's bragging rights, identity and MONEY
I'm not just talking about gambling purses. A top champion (or even mid-level champ with great game) can make their owners a FORTUNE by reproducing puppies and then selling them. They can keep them in kennel (both male and female parents) or sell the siring/littering and split the proceeds with another kennel.

Lastly, while this is pretty big in the US, it's still illegal and underground. The BBC would have a much bigger and more grotesque story if they looked east to Russia, where it's largely legal, sanctioned, and the dogs (Volkodavs) make canes, presas and dogos look like kittens.
