Alicia Silverstone to be naked in ad

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) -- An animal rights group says Alicia Silverstone appears naked in a television ad promoting vegetarianism that was to debut Wednesday in Houston.

The 30-second ad was to air about two dozen times in Houston on Wednesday, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said.

PETA said Houston was picked for the commercial's launch because it is often high on lists of cities with unhealthy eating habits. Houston was named the sixth fattest city in the nation by Men's Fitness magazine this year.

Silverstone is shown emerging from a swimming pool and talking about the benefits of being a vegetarian.

I for one don't mind looking at a lovely body, male or female. I concede the point that using women's bodies to sell absolutely everything is needless, but I think some folks' reactions are a bit strong.

5. I've seen this kind of blind line-in-the-sand scenario over and over.

Not that I don't agree that there IS exploitation of a woman's looks/body, so to speak. However, I didn't see a gun to Alicia's head. PETA isn't "using a woman's body" to "sell" a position. Alicia is allowing her image promote her own beliefs through a powerful animal rights organization. Cuz, uh yeah, she made her career in Hollywood not based one iota on her looks. She was half naked in that one movie where she was that crazy chick.

To be honest, I can truly understand her participating. I've done a number of pics, spots and discussion panels in front of thousands of people, and one of the highlights was when Wayne Pacelle, after having not seen me for 3 years or so told me that I was "a monster" and that "we need more folks just like you" in this game. Why? Sure, partially because I'm a proud animal thief, partially because I'm well spoken, but also partially because I don't look the character. I'll exploit my genetics every time I can if it helps animals in some way. PETA could call me tomorrow, and I'll be wearing a thong and a taxi cap riding a tricycle if it helps. I won't call it "exploitation" but rather helping the cause.
