no going back- I am definitely going vegetarian!
I had sent away for many publications telling the story of cows, pigs and chickens and I had been doing pretty good with my decision to go vegetarian, for the most part. I had er- slipped a couple of times and had some turkey or chicken. It is so tough while you are out to eat properly.

But something happened on Saturday that affected me deeply. I work at the post office and some baby chicks were sent through the mail. The sweet little peep peep sound that they make is so darling. Our curiosity got the best of us and we lifted up the flap to take a look at them. Aw- bits of yellow fluff- about a dozen little babies!

But then the woman came in and we found out that they were cornish game hens. Someone asked her what was going to happen to them, to which she replied- "you don't want to know."

I don't know how anyone can raise such a sweet little critter with such intentions. That does it for me- no more meat- whatsoever.

1. Congratulations!!
Another great transition.

I didn't know one could ship "livestock" through the USPS.

:loveya: :loveya: I want so bad to have some chickens someday, I'll give them so much love to make up for all the years I ate meat.

3. stuntcat, they are exactly like my little guys
perhaps a little less yellow, but the same cute bundle of fluff. Up until now, I have been doing pretty good with my meatless diet, sometimes just an occasional slice of turkey or chicken, but NO MORE.

Every creature has rights.

4. I have some parishioners who receive chicks through the mail.
They raise (and kill) chickens on an organic farm. Their chickens are free-range. They roam free during the day and are closed into pens and coops at night, to protect them from foxes, owls, hawks, etc. So, their lives are better than a factory farm, but they still end up hanging upside down in a slaughterhouse. Most are laying hens, but they'll still end up as meat. After starting their lives in factory farms (I hate to think how their poor mothers live).

And the chickens are really cool critters. I went and helped them plant vegetables two years ago, and this one laying hen and I sat together afterwards, me just petting her and feeding her birdseed. She still remembers me, and follows me around when I go to visit. They're really sweet animals.
