Sweet Jesus. Alanis Morisette went vegan, looks and feels great.
Less than a year ago, Alanis Morissette found herself in a heavy situation: the once-svelte rock star had packed on weight, and the processed food she’d been eating left her feeling unhealthy.

Determined to get back on track, Alanis turned to Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live, a plan that recommends consuming fruit, vegetables, beans and nuts, and avoiding meat and dairy products.

Alanis’ vegan diet — one of the more popular in Hollywood these days — has helped her shed 20 pounds since she began the new regime in September.

Now, the 34-year-old singer who redefined “ironic” is proud to show off her new shape and share her dieting tips with OK! readers.

Good gravy, but she does look good.

1. I'm really uncomfortable with describing veganism as a diet.
Veganism is an ethical system with a dietary component. People who are just in it for weight loss, or as a cleanse, or to align their chakras or for whatever BS reason that has nothing to do with animals are just strict vegetarians. It may be a convenient shorthand to describe their diets as vegan, but there's more to it than that. And, in my experience, they rarely stick with their diets anyhow.

3. At the very least, people who are vegan just to lose weight
aren't going to stick to it, and aren't going to being able to explain the values of a vegan diet against all the hostility out there. They aren't invested in being a vegan. It's just a matter of convenience for them while they shed a few pounds and then they're gone. :(

They might be among us for a while but they won't seriously help us spread any kind of message about all the other reasons why a vegan diet is important. They won't defend it when the loonies start shouting.

2. Good for her!
The more vegetarians/vegans this inspires, the better -- whatever their reasons.

Further enlightenment and ethical motivations can come slowly or quickly -- but in the meantime, the "meat industry" and animal slaughter are reduced another notch.

We should all send Alanis messages of congratulations, expand her understanding and reasons for remaining vegan, and encourage her to spread the word to her many fans.
