Need help making hummus edible.
Tried it yesterday (just bought a jar of the stuff) and it tastes awful. I know a lot of people who swear by it, so I'm thinking I'm going about it the wrong way.

Is there some sort of condiment or something you add to make it taste a bit better? I don't want to have to throw out the entire jar, but I also don't want to have to suffer through eating something that I really don't care for.

Thanks in advance.

1. Lots of people make their own
You could take yours and mix it with something you like, like sweet bell and spicy peppers, garlic and onion, olives and chives, basically anything you think would be good in a bean dip. I would use a chopper or mince anything you add very fine.

If that doesn't work, chuck it and try a different brand or variety.

Hope it works out for you, me; I like three pepper red hummus on pitas.

2. try eating it on crackers...
If it tastes like cracker, it might not disturb you as much, maybe?

Just some advice that I'm not really qualified to give out :)

3. Adding a bit more info...
I usually eat it on bread, like a sandwich. My brother suggested putting lettuce on it, but I can't see how that would help.

I may just take the above poster's advice and try a different brand...

4. A Jar? Hmm, I get mine in those refrigerated plastic tubs
in the deli section. It's pretty fresh that way. For some reason it's better on flat breads - pitas, tortillas etc. Start out, not using a ton, just use it almost like you would Mayo or another condiment. Then add other things you like (lettuce, tomato, avocado, veggie cheese if you like). I don't think it's really meant to be used like peanut butter. I've never used it plain and thick like that. Just try using it like you would your favorite condiment. You can also buy pita chips and use it as a dip with them. I sometimes have that for lunch.

Sometimes a little lime juice mixed in will help freshen up the taste too.

Good luck!

5. A local company makes three varities that I really like . . .
One has chipolte peppers in it -- very spicy! The other has artichoke hearts in it -- very creamy & tasty! And the other has sundried tomatoes in it -- yum! Try adding something like that to the stuff you have. Also, if it's dry, add a little bit more olive oil.

The ultimate? Make your own. It's very easy & IMO, even better if you use homecooked garbanzos. Not sure where to start? Here's a great site with a ton of veg recipes. Enter hummus into the search & be prepared to get a lot of hits.

6. I like it with blue corn chips
Also, try putting a little olive oil on it with some cucumbers, tomatoes, red onion, and paprika. Toast or warm up your pita bread or flat bread or blue corn chip and dip in in the hummus making sure to get some of the veggies. It could also just be that brand. Don't give up, try other brands. Look for it in the deli section in tubs. Hope this helps.

7. I tried it in a jar for the first time last week, didn't like it - go for
the kind in the refrigerator section. best I've found so far is Trader Joe's organic version - delicious and tastes homemande. i like it best with tabbouli - which is also really healthy to cut it with! and with pita chips or your favorite crackers.

It was the brand. I've tried a new one, and I really really like it.

I just needed to try a different Kroger...
