The Inner World of Farm Animals: Their Amazing Intellectual, Emotional, and Social Capacities
and
Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry
Two amazing authors, Amy Hatkoff & Gail Eisnitz join us.
Amy's book, "The Inner World of Farm Animals brings together a fascinating mix of science and story-telling about the intelligence and emotional lives of farm animals. Gail's book, Slaughterhouse exposes how the modern meat industry needlessly tortures these animals and endangers both workers and consumers.

Today's Guests

Amy Hatkoff
Amy Hatkoff is a child and family advocate, parenting educator, author and filmmaker. Her newest book, The Inner World of Farm Animals brings the emotional, social and intellectual capacities of farm animals to life. With a foreword by Jane Goodall and an afterword by Wayne Pacelle, President of The Humane Society of the United States, the book challenges us all to reconsider the way we think about and treat farm animals. Combining the latest research with touching stories and beautiful photographs, the book makes a plea for treating these beings with compassion and respect.
She also wrote You Are My World: How a Parent's Love Shapes a Baby's Mind

The Inner World of Farm Animals: Their Amazing Intellectual, Emotional, and Social Capacities by Amy Hatkoff

Chickens can count. Pigs are smarter than poodles. Cows form close friendships. Turkeys know one another by their voices, and sheep recognize faces—of other sheep, and of people. Far from lacking thoughts and feelings, barnyard creatures demonstrate sophisticated problem-solving abilities, possess rich social lives, and feel a wide range of emotions. In other words, they’re much like humans in countless ways. And, like us, they suffer physical pain and mental anguish.
In The Inner World of Farm Animals, Amy Hatkoff combines the latest research on the emotional and intellectual capacities of farm animals with touching—and often surprising—stories to bring their inner world to life. Soulful photographs of cows, goats, lambs, and other barnyard animals complement the text, and add to the belief that these creatures deserve our attention. In this heartfelt book, Hatkoff joins the growing call for treating these sentient, aware beings with compassion and respect.

I just received this book and I'm absolutely blown away. The photographs Amy chose for this book perfectly capture the beautiful essence of the various species and individuals featured, and the stories are enough to make people change their minds about "farm animals" without having to sift through high scientific language. I will be giving many copies out as gifts for many years to come. Brava!
~ Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, The Joy of Vegan Baking

Gail Eisnitz feeding a friend
Gail A. Eisnitz (San Rafael, CA), winner of the Albert Schweitzer Medal for outstanding achievement in animal welfare, is the chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association. Her work has resulted in exposés by ABC’s Good Morning America, PrimeTime Live, and Dateline NBC, and her interviews have been heard on more than 1,000 radio stations. Her work has been featured in such newspapers as The New York Times, Miami Herald, Detroit Free Press, Texas Monthly, Denver Business Journal, Los Angeles Times, and US News & World Report. Eisnitz was the driving force behind a front-page exposé in The Washington Post documenting slaughterhouse atrocities. The Washington Post reporter later described Eisnitz as “the most courageous investigator I’ve ever seen.” The story was one of the highest reader-response pieces ever run by The Washington Post.

Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry by Gail Eisnitz
Even if you don't read this because you're an animal lover, read it because you love yourself and your family enough not to feed them the filth and disease that comes out of the meat factories. If you can look past the sad eyes of the cow that is being skinned alive, then if nothing else just stop a moment to think about the things that have come into contact with the meat you're eating. This book describes the filth and disease that make it all the way to that meat on your plate. I'm a Registered Dietitian and I had learned to trust the USDA. If there was a USDA certification on my meat label I was safe. My "trusted" USDA now recommends that I cook the meat that I buy to a safe temperature to kill everything that they missed. Why else do you think you can't buy a rare hamburger anymore? It's because it's dirty and diseased and it has to be practically burnt to remove risk of that filth/disease from the factors being passed on to the consumer. ~amazon reviewer

2. Slaughterhouse is a fantastic book, I highly recommend it.
In case anybody's wondering, it's not salaciously gory, not focused on gross-out stuff, and the focus on the interplay between deregulation, exploitation of labor and abuse of animals is very well done.
