Tofurkey thanksgiving "turkey"--is it good?
I saw one today when I went to pick up some stuff at my favorite health food store. It is about $10. I have bought the deli slices and they are the best imo..no funny aftertaste. But this is a lot of money for about 1 or 1.5 lbs. Has anyone ever bought it and is it worth $10? Thanks

1. I like them.
I get them over the holidays and they are super tasty with a little extra effort. Believe it or not, my husband and I can get at least two meals out of the tiny little loaf. Don't let size fool you, it's really filling!

I bake it in a covered casserole dish with a basting mix of butter, veggie chicken broth, apricot jam, fresh herbs (rosemary and oregano bundles), and chopped up onions. I baste it a few times while it's cooking and then about half way through I'll take it out and turn it so it can crisp up on both sides, then pop it back in the oven 'til it's done.

Once it's done, I remove the herb bundle from the dish and pour the rest of the basting mix into a pan on the stove. With a hand mixer, I'll blend it all down to a gravy and add more seasonings to taste, letting it simmer for a bit.

Even though it comes 'stuffed', I still make stuffing on the side, because there is nothing like homemade stuffing!

I hope you find this helpful.

6. Thanks to all for the great information!

As for Field roast, I did a search and I would have to drive about 45 minutes for the closest place to me where they have it. Maybe the next time I have to fill my freezer and pantry I will make a trip. Unfortunately I live in the forgotten part of CT (East) so I either have to go toward to other end or go to Providence for Whole Foods or any of those stores.

I am still in the learning stage of being a vegan so I really appreciate all the information.

Oops, I meant for this post to go at the end! Sorry

8. Try the online stores...
http://www.veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=646

There is one available at Pangea, VeganStore.com (linked above) You'll almost double the price though if you only buy one as you do have to pay $6 for a freezy (ice-pack) to keep it frozen...the cost does not go up if you buy a lot of stuff though: 1 Freezy, 1 Box.

If you ordered it now, you'll get it certainly before the holidays.

9. Thanks for that link!
I ordered 2 of them plus some other stuff. I live in CT so the shipping isn't that much.

Thanks again!

2. If you like the deli slices, you'll probably like Tofurky.
But keep in mind that those deli slices are really, really thinly sliced. So if you try to slice the Tofurky roast into traditional (dead fowl) turkey slices, you'll be overwhelmed by how dense it is.

Thin slices and lots of (perhaps mushroom?) gravy for the win! :hi:

3. With the demise of Unturkey, it's the best alternative
short of making it yourself that most folks can find. It's definitely worth $10. When I get it, I'll easily get 5 meals out of it.

Also, find the giblet gravy they also sell. Very good.

4. As pre-made stuff goes, I prefer Field Roast.
Their Celebration Roast is especially fantastic. http://www.fieldroast.com/products.htm Price is about the same as Tofurkey, and I think it's a much better product.

10. Here's the recipe I use. It's from the Tofurkey people. So yummy!!!
Edited on Sat Nov-14-09 03:05 PM by Beaverhausen
Roast Tofurky baked w/Caramelized Onion & Cherries

Description:

Can be served with Tofurky Giblet & Mushroom Gravy drizzled over it also.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, sliced very thin
1 cup dried sour cherries
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons dijon mustard
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
4 tablespoons apple cider
1 Tofurky roast

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium heat. Add onion, cherries, brown sugar and vinegar and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft. Stir in mustard and apple cider, and simmer for two more minutes. Place Tofurky roast on sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil, and spread with the onion mixture. Wrap roast snugly with the foil. Place in roasting pan, and place on center rack of oven. Bake for 45 minutes. Uncover roast for last 10 minutes of baking.

Slice roast, and serve with some of the pan juices spooned over it.

11. The key is to get the outside crispy.
Like someone above said, it won't be like the deli slices. I used to do the tofurky loafs, but now we just do open faced tofurky sandwiches with the tofurky slices. It's easier & we like them better.

25. Quorn products are great
and if I can get them at many places in Oklahoma, you should be able to find them anywhere ;)

Tofurkeys are revolting (this from two vegetarians of over a decade). Retched. With the Quorn roast, I marinate it in a roasting bag with rosemary, thyme, garlic power, black pepper, cayenne pepper, olive oil and a little water for a few hours, in the fridge. I give it a good couple of shakes and then bake it. Then, I throw some vegan gravy on it. YUM.
That's what my husband and I are having at our friends' house tomorrow.
And, the leftovers are awesome!

27. That is true...
but I can't be a vegan, due to some health issues :( My husband takes in no dairy except eggs (though I suspect he'd give that up with little problem). I tried a lentil loaf last year and well, it tasted wonderful, but my GI tract was another story the next day.

14. I second Quorn over Tofurkey.
I find Tofurkey vile. Quorn tastes pretty darn close to the real thing (as I remember it) AND it's not soy-based. It's also super-easy to cook--basically idiot-proof.

It's getting easier to find Quorn. Store locater here: http://www.quorn.us/cmpage.aspx?pageid=475

18. I always fill up the freezer after thanksgiving,
because one of the Trader Joe's around here always orders too many and winds up clearing the meal kits out for $3 or so.

20. It's the one way out in the burbs. I don't think there are very many vegetarians there.
I suppose one of these years they might clue in and order fewer, but three of the last four years they've had a pile of the boxes for sale after Thanksgiving. Last year I didn't see any but I think they'd already sold them while I was out of town. I think I'll ask my sister (she's not a vegetarian, but I think she's getting there) to stop by and grab a few for each of us if they have them cheap again.
