I've been lurking here for a couple of months but just got my star. I just wanted to say hello to everyone, and I hope none of you mind if I hang around here a bit! :hi:

And so I can offer something, let me recommend the book "Dominion" by Matthew Scully. Scully's a Republican, unfortunately, and a former speechwriter for *, but he strikes me as more of an old-school conservative than a neocon, and his writing in defense of animals is eloquently written and deeply sincere, as well as full of great arguments to counter some of the more ridiculous crap we get every day from people calling *us* sentimental while shouting at us in defense of their table treats.

I think animal protection is very nonpartisan, especially that Sen. Rick Santorum's a repub, and co-authored the Puppy Protection Act with a dem a couple of years ago!

I feel like an idiot for sharing my "discovery" - I should have known everyone here would have read that book already. (Hey, did everyone know there's this group called PETA that works on animal rights??) :silly:

12. Sadly, those kinds of Republicans are more reasonable than Dems..

I am appalled at what I've found on this board with regard to this issue...it's really scary and, when you peel back the onion, it's why we lost the election. Hysterical hate-filled people who don't even understand what they hate. Yet when I've visited Sean Hannity's site, they are so much more reasonable - they still are mostly anti-vegetarian, but they don't express it with nearly as much hostility.

Makes me sad.

as I have said before I used to be very active in the animal rights and vegetarian movements and I found that a great many of the people that were also involved were republicans. I thought maybe it just happened that more repubs were active but now I can see that it isn't just that but it is an active disgust and anger that the more 'liberal' people have for our point of view. It's very disappointing and upsetting to get more support and understanding from the other side than from your own...it's very disenchanting. :-(

14. I plan to order and read that book in the upcoming month.

It looks to be very moving and could help out a great deal with the Republican rednecks I am surrounded by here in Nebraska, family included.

It is helpful (here) that he is a former speech-writer for W. and deeply religious.
