I don't suppose we have any Vegans or Vegetarians from Chicago here?

I'm looking for good Vegan restaurants and places to get good vegan food from. Even if you live elsewhere, if you have any ideas, please let me know!

1. I'm from Chicago

The best food in town, veg or otherwise, is Soul Vegetarian East on the south side. If you don't eat at any other restaurant in Chicago, you must eat there. I kid you not.

The Chicago Diner on N. Halstead in Boys' Town is pretty good, as is Karyn's Fresh Corner (down the street from the Diner), which is all raw/vegan - also expensive, but very good.

There's the Pick Me Up Cafe on the north side, not completely veg but very veg friendly, and the Blindfaith Cafe in Evanston which I also recommend.

In the NW suburbs (Arlington Heights) is a place called Chopatti - *very* good stuff! They make ethnic foods from all over the world, including American, all vegetarian (and I believe won "Best Chicagoland Vegetarian Food" or some such award a few times).

That's all the major ones I can think off of the top of my head.

I'm used to living in the city and even though I now live not too terribly far outside the city, it's still a big difference. The only stores we have here are Wal-mart and Beef-mart. I have to stock up on weekends in the city!

Amitabul is a vegan restaurant.

Chicago Diner is patchy quality-wise but I love their tofu loaf and tofu cheesecake.

Udupi Palace on Devon is a Southern Indian restaurant, quite different from the usual fare we associate with Indian restaurants. It's all vegetarian and draws large Indian families for dinner.

8. I'm living in Chicago

and I'm trying to eat vegetarian. The midwest is so centered around meat.
Anyway, if you want good deep dish pizza, Medici's in Hyde Park has some great veggie ones. Leona's is a local chain that isn't all vegetarian, but they have a lot of vegetarian and organic and some vegan items on the menu. Otherwise it seems like most of the vegan places are on the north side. Heartland Cafe near Loyola is pretty good.
