Where else do you discuss AR/Veggie issues?
I know that I take point for these issues on a few different forums--some technical, some political, some sporting--and I'll bet you do, too. :D

But I'm curious: Where else do you bang the AR/Veggie drum? Do you only do it on veg-specific or -friendly sites, or do you do it on a broad range of forums?

1. Wherever I go, my drum goes.
Granted, I only bang that drum when appropriate. If I'm discussing baseball, I won't go into a tirade about the leather gloves. But if someone brings up a veg/AR topic, I'm happy to participate in the discussion.

And oddly enough, I don't belong to/participate on any veg/AR specific message boards, forums or sites. Our group here is the only veg/AR forum I post on.

2. Ahh, the leather vs. synthetic sports powderkeg.
I made the mistake once of bragging on a sports forum about my spiffy new entirely leather-free fencing glove, and you would have thought I confessed to killing Kennedy.

3. Well, if you don't, I'd suggest finding your local Veggie group.
They probably have a forum, website, IRC, etc., given that it's 2010*. :) I know DU can be a bit hostile for vegetarians sometimes (Mods: No criticism intended! It's a big forum with a big population, so you'll get a proportionate share of jerks.), so I hope emerging/curious vegetarians realize that they can speak out in this forum pretty freely.

:grouphug:

But if you still can't hack it, find a local group of like-minded people. That's how real change happens, anyway.

:hi:

* - Still no jetpack. Very disappointed.

4. Don't you know that veg heads are immune to verbal beatings and criticism
after all I heard that we only reject eating animal products to prove how superior we are to flesh eaters. :sarcasm:

I will say that of all the things that go on here taking a beating for not eating my friends is the least stressful of all of them. :D

You have a great idea, thanks for mentioning it since I don't have a local network of vegetarians to discuss things with.

5. I resisted the idea at first, myself.
But after the initial meeting or two, you'll find that local vegetarians are "just folks" in the same way that local progressive/peace-action/Democratic/Green/Quaker groups are. :)

And they always know the best places to shop!

6. Sadly I mostly just don't bother anymore.
I'll mention I'm a 20 year+ vegan and explain if asked, but beyond that it's just a huge waste of effort. The same tired jokes, the same weak excuses, and the same lame-ass justifications offered up over and over have worn me out -- not to mention the out-and-out hostility!

I honestly believe it's an issue people have to come to themselves. No advocacy on my part will accomplish much.

7. Agreed.
You can try to educate & open minds, but ultimately, like you said, they have to come to it themselves.

When I first came to DU I had been a member of a veggie board for many years. I didn't expect the same kind of acceptance to the veg life as the veg board, but I was shocked at the outright hostility of so many, toward what I consider a very liberal world view - do no harm & leave a small foot print.

8. That is sad, but I think most of us are pretty tired, too.
I've started limiting my own advocacy to simply correcting bold-faced lies made about the healthfulness of a veggie diet or about some of our big AR organizations.
