Michael is at work again --
Dear Members and Friends,
It's been two years since I stepped down as President of Best Friends. Thank you for all your good wishes and your questions about what's next. This is to let you know about my new work for the animals at www.zoenature.org. I invite you to be part of it.
ZOE (it's the Greek word for life) is setting out to do for other kinds of animals what we did at Best Friends for homeless pets.
Twenty years ago, 17 million homeless pets were being killed in shelters every year. Today, it's fewer than 5 million, and almost all the humane societies and shelters are on board the no-kill movement. It was a pioneering work, and you made it all possible.
A NEW CHALLENGE. Today, however, millions of other kinds of animals, all over the world, are losing their homes, too. Their lands are being overrun, their environment is changing, and they're being hunted down for food and entertainment.
Every week, there seems to be something new: from the Gulf oil disaster to the huge recall of 500 million eggs ... all examples of how cruelty to animals and disrespect for the natural world can have big consequences for all of us.
All this news can be a bit overwhelming. But that's how it felt when we first learned how many homeless pets were dying in shelters. And working together, we began to turn the whole thing around.
We can do the same thing again.
ZOE - IT'S OUR NATURE: Zoe begins with a fledgling new online magazine that's all about reconnecting with the animals and nature. At www.zoenature.org, you'll find:
serious news and fun news, with photos and videos ordinary people doing extraordinary things for animals in their own neighborhoods amazing animal stories and top tips and ideas about how we can all live in closer harmony with the animals and nature. To kick off, we have a special feature about dolphins: their remarkable intelligence and the new campaign to protect them worldwide.
OUR MISSION: As Zoe grows, we'll be bringing together the best and the brightest of people who care about the animals and who want to help create the blueprint for a new way of living - one that's kind to animals and respectful of the natural world.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: I'd really value your being part of the new site. We have new items almost every day, so come back regularly. You can comment on any of the articles, and please invite your friends, too.
Right now, Zoe is all-volunteer. We're entirely self-supporting and are not funded by any other organization. So your support will be much appreciated at www.zoenature.org/donate.
Please let me know what you think of the fledgling site. And again, thank you so much for all your questions and good wishes. I look forward to seeing you again on Zoe.
All good wishes,
Michael Mountain
