As a vegan… how bad it is to go on a cruise?
Edited on Thu Nov-17-11 03:08 PM by Lost-in-FL
Hubby and I are considering to check out a Cruise for a second time. The first time we went I was not Vegan but I thought the buffet meals, excluding the one's on the main dinning areas, were terrible. I was told that our experience was bad because the ship was from the 80's fleet and thus need to try the newer fleet which are bigger and more 'entertainment friendly'.

We are not really the Cruise kind of people (even before our first adventure) but in this life one must try at least twice. We might have had a disappointing first experience but wanted to try a second time before we both totally rule out cruises from our bucket list.

Edit to add: I know I can 'google' this info but it would be better to ask DUers that have gone through the experience.

1. That's a very interesting question.
I've never been on a cruise, so I have no answer for you. Hopefully someone will come along with good info for you.

2. I went on a Carnival Cruise with a friend several years ago
I'm a vegetarian and we went to the buffet for our meals. If you stick to the salad bar and the fruit offerings you'll be OK. Beyond that it's pretty much all junk. Sadly they're not veg*n friendly or health conscious. I'm not vegetarian for health reasons so I didn't mind eating some fried junk food (particularly while on a vacation) but it's still disappointing that it's often the only fare veg*n people can find in some places.

3. This cruise features organic/vegan meals:

Full disclosure: I am not a cruise person either and found this through a Google search but, being vegetarian, I always feel more confident knowing the person cooking my food really understands what that means and it looks like you'd have no worries about that on this cruise.

Also, no annoying "I could NEVER give up eating meat!" comments from your fellow diners. :)

4. Thank you guys for the answers!
If I found something out, I will gladly post any info I get.

So far I have seen one company that says that they won't be able to warranty vegan or vegetarian meals at this time. Oh well… their loss. ;)

5. I've been on Holland America Cruises
I found maintaining pure Vegan diet difficult. Room Service salads and oatmeal were always safe choices but I didn't always trust the buffet items. They were open to lots of questions though and I didn't starve. There's always lots and lots of fresh fruit and the espresso stand had soy milk.
