Faux-vegan stuff
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 11:52 PM by LeftyMom
I hate things that say they're vegan but aren't.

Mothering mag has a full page ad for Dr Bronner's lip balm. It says in the bottom corner that it's vegan but has beeswax in it. Another brand of lipbalm whose name I forget says it's vegan right on the label. The first ingredient is beeswax.

Do you know of any other products that claim to be vegan but aren't (so we can all be on the lookout) and is there anything that can be done to stop that sort of deceptive labeling?

edit for typos

1. I can't think of anything specifically, but some moran on eBay
was selling Mat & Nat vegan handbags and going on and on about the LEATHER trim, and even showed the vegan inscription on the bags! Now THAT is a dolt. :P

2. As for the Dr. Bronner's lip balm
They have this to say:

"Why do you use organic beeswax in your lip and body balms?
Although our line is otherwise vegan, we do use certified organic beeswax in the lip and body balms. We could not find a certified organic plant-based wax, and Sue anyway insisted that she has not found a plant-based alternative that can substitute for the amazing qualities of beeswax: based on her experience and extensive training and mentoring under the Native American herbalist Keewaydinoquay, Sue formulated her original lip balms with just avocado oil and beeswax, because beeswax has natural antibacterial and sunblock qualities and provides a superior barrier to keep moisture in. We buy our certified organic beeswax from New Zealand, and we checked to make sure that the queens are not killed each year as happens sometimes with conventional beekeeping to maximize yields"

I appreciate their tenacity in their investigation, but it's still not vegan.

3. Okay I'm less irritated now
It's still not vegan but I couldn't use it anyway, I'm allergic to avocado.

4. The Merry Hempsters have a vegan lip balm.
Actually, I think it comes in a couple of different 'flavors.' I really like the peppermint.

Recently I saw a brand of 'vegan' sour cream that had honey in it. I think many manufacturers don't really know & understand what vegan is. They probably think if it doesn't have beef, chicken, pork or fish in it, it's vegan.

I've learned that you must read ALL labels & even read the labels of things you've bought before cuz they change.

5. I have that stuff
I get a burning sensation on my lips when I use it, for some reason.

You're right about the ingredients changing, I accidentally gave LeftyKid a Health is Wealth chickenish patty before I noticed they'd reformulated and added eggs. Those were his favorite, too. :shakes fist at Health is Wealth:

6. The oil of peppermint maybe?
I can't find any other vegan lip balm, although an online friend tells me that Jason has one.

7. I saw that, someone brought that into work.

I think for most people, it passes as vegan because they don't know any better. At the same time, I am appreciative of and grateful to anyone who takes steps towards making their life more humane towards animals.

8. Morningstar Farms food products
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 04:09 AM by BuffyTheFundieSlayer
They call their foods "veggie", which implies that they contain no animal products, yet nearly every one of them contains egg and/or milk ingredients.

9. Morningstar is vegetarian, not vegan.
Vegetarian products contain dairy. Doesn't make any difference to me, as I am vegetarian, not vegan. I eat dairy products. At least the animal wasn't killed for the eggs, milk and cheese.

10. I'm vegetarian too
I just know some people have been confused before by their product labeling. It pays to read the "fine print" on the back and not just rely on the bold stuff on the front.
