iPhoto sucks! I need a replacement
I have about 2,000 photos in it, and it is SO SLOW. Seriously, it takes at least a minute to OPEN the program. Scrolling has a 5-10 second delay. Clicking on a picture takes several seconds. This is so maddening! It worked fine when I had a couple photos in it, but it looks like it can not handle quantity.

Anyone know of another good, free image viewing program? I can keep the pics organized by myself, but I want some kind of program to go through them that does not require individual opening (like photoshop)

1. Well, which iPhoto do you have?
2 sucked!!! There was no 3, and 4 was way better for large numbers of photos. 5 just came out today, so I would go for that.

5. Well, there you go...
Just wait until the 22nd and go pick up the new iLife... New everything (iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie...). If only iPhoto was sold seperately.

8. You don't have to defrag with OS X...
It is automatic, for one... second, defrag is not useful in OS X until the hard drive is around 95% full. Anyway, if it is that full, you should go through and purge, or you will notice severe slowdown.

10. At a little more than 1000, mine's slowing down.
I've got 2 as well. I thought adding a ram card might help. It's nice to see a new version coming out though.

I disagree on Nikon View. I think it's a cheap, overly windows-like interface. I don't like the albums being sub files in the DVD burn file. I hate the light blue cast to the interface. rotating, cropping, deleting shots require a confirmation, and the wait for full resolution is longer, even with iPhoto's problems with volume. The slide shows (the most important part for me) are not as refined as iPhoto. Shot transitions are herky-jerky, as opposed to iPhoto's smooth dissolve. Music from iTunes can't be programmed in (although I hate the fact that iPhoto only allows 1 song to play, and I can't shift/click multiples. Some of my slide shows last 20-30 minutes). iPhoto's look is better. As far as retouching and fixing photos, I use neither. PS does that job better than both.

11. Yeah, get the new iPhoto then...
So much more control with the slideshows and can handle 25,000 photos like 500.

12. I've got iphoto 4
Roughly 3700 photos on it and it works fine. Takes maybe 6 or 7 seconds to load. This is on a 1 Ghz powerbook g4 with 1 gig of RAM. You can try getting the newer version of iphoto which I think will help you. Or perahps you might need more RAM.

13. I just upgraded to iphoto5
Theoretically, it should be able to handle RAW format pictures... Haven't played with it much yet, but like what I see from the little bit that I have done with it.

They definitely made a lot of improvements between 4 and 5- I couldn't tell you all of them, but it seems less 'buggy' and less 'laggy'.

14. I recommend FILM FACTORY v3 by Epson
It's a terrific program for handling lots of photos (I have thousands) and doing basic maintenance like basic cropping, rotating, some contrast and color, renaming, LOTS of stuff on printing, and so on. I've used it for years. It comes in versions for System 9 and Sysem 10, same price - $29.99 to unlock the key after downloading the demo version (works for 30 days otherwise). I got the System 9 version and am now going to try using it in the System 9 environment under System 10 because I'm that cheap. Seems OK so far. If I have too many glitches, I'll pop the 30 bucks and buy the System 10 version.

You can purchase it from the Epson site:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/ProductCategory.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=-8235

If I want to do more elaborate work on photos, I use Adobe Photoshop Elements. But if I want to do the basic stuff and have slide shows and manage my photos, I use Epson Film Factory. It's a great help and a real bargain.

15. the newest one (5?) works well
it's pretty fast, because it uses lower-quality images when you scroll quickly. They become progressively finer as you slow down or open them. I think it works well enough for me to not change!

16. Iview media is excellent -- but it does costs something.
I didn't realize the updates for iphoto cost extra. I have OS 10.3.8 and I just assumed that all the latest iphoto stuff was being updated with everything else. What else do we have to pay extra for?? This is all very confusing.

It appears that I can download iphoto 4.0.3 for free -- is it worth it?

Also what gives with the pop-up when one opens up DU through Safari?

17. Iphoto 4.0.3 can't be installed without iphoto 4 -- so I guess the only
iphoto that's included with panther is iphoto 2 -- that sucks!
