I've just gotta rave about Pages....

It's worth the money to buy iWork if you do any sort of document creation or editing. I've been editing a manuscript to get it ready for final submission to a publisher, and it automates a lot of the grunt tasks (like double spaces at the ends of sentences). But on things like news letters and bigger documents... oh, wow... it sings.

I've been using InDesign 2.0 for about 3 years now, and on a whim, I imported the kludgy 2.0 doc I'm working on into Pages, and it's grand. SO much easier to use.

It blows appleworks out of the water, and none of the instability problems of M$ Office.

2. Couple of questions...

How is the compatiblity with Word? I've just started using Abiword, and find the compatibility is pretty good except that sometimes certain formating is lost. Things like line spacing.

Does the spell check function as you type? Or do you need to use it after you are done? Does it have a thesaurus?

I saw something about selecting noncontinuous elements. Does this mean you can select a word here and a word there and change the font or make them bold, etc? I've been looking for that feature for years.

3. Oh, of course you can do all that formatting stuff!

And does spell check as you type, and the text looks oh so pretty on the screen. And the text wrap around images is so easy to use. And Word compatibility is amazing. I totally agree with the glowing recommendation above.

4. Is the formatting maintained when sending to a PC?

I guess what I meant to ask was, if I send a Pages document to a client who only has Word on a PC, will the formatting be the same? Or if he sends me a Word doc and I open it in Pages, will it look exactly the same?

5. It depends on what you are doing in Pages...

If it is just word processing, then yes all the formatting will carry over. If you are doing graphic heavy stuff, there may be conversion issues. Your best bet is to export to Adobe PDF (Not the one Apple uses, though it will result in a much larger file) and send that.
