HELP! Tech help needed URGENTLY!!! MAC ate file!
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 02:31 AM by BeHereNow
Hello fellow Mac user DUers,
Here's the deal:
The kid spent the last seven hours making a
Power point presentation to go with her English paper/
Senior thesis paper due tomorrow!
She burned it to a CD and then when she
tried to open it on her laptop desktop it said
part of the file was missing and could not be opened.
Any ideas?
We searched the whole damned system and it
appears to be no where...I feel so bad for her.
In advance, THANKS for any and all suggestions!
BHN
On Edit:
System details: Mac OS X / G4 laptop

1. Have you tried opening the program first, and then the file?
rather than just double clicking on the file? If that doesn't work, you may need a repair program like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro.

2. Powerpoint is looking for linked files -- pictures or movies she imported
Powerpoint may have even renamed it if she just drug them in.

When I used powerpoint, it did not like having presentations w pictures and movies burned to CD and moved to another computer. It would freak out in the manner in which you describe. . .it is not a Mac problem, it is a Powerpoint problem.

Your best bet in this case may be to contact Microsoft Tech Support.

I do presentations for a living, please reconsider powerpoint. Powerpoint is yucky (your problems are an example of its yuckyness).

I recommend you try Apple's Keynote software for presentations. . .works really well, is dazzling, and has numerous export options.

Here is a link. . .cheap at 79.00, and there is a cheaper version for education if you qualify.

3. When I used to use PowerPoint
I was always careful to keep the .PPT and any referenced source files (like videos) in the same directory/folder. Referencing a file in a different directory/folder was bad news.

4. Powerpoint is bad news, I think we can all agree. . .
Excellent Tip though for those who must continue using it.

5. I actually like it some.
It's just not the best tool, and everything it turns out looks like "PowerPoint." I see audiences eyes roll when they see yet another PowerPoint presentation pop up on the screen. It's too recognizable and distracts from your message.

However, it's pretty easy, and almost universally available.

6. I was doing most of my high end corporate stuff in Director
before President Bush fixed our economy.

I have seen some tremendous looking stuff done in Keynote 2 -- while the export stuff in the original keynote was lame, apparently the new one will export to Flash etc
