Does anyone know why...
My OSX Mail program would hang up when I choose one particular sender's email? It's from the United Cerebral Palsy News, which comes about once a month ever since I signed a petition for them. As soon as I click on the email, it highlights, and then I get the spinning beachball or whatever Apple is calling it these days. Then I have to force quit. The only way I can delete this evil email is by shift-selecting the ones above and below it.

I ran Repair Permissions, which I understand is the old Rebuild Desktop, but that didn't do anything.

Eventually I'll email the sender and get taken off their list but, for now, I'm curious has anyone else had this problem. OSX, even though it still is so foreign to me, has been a pretty smooth operator. Especially on this dual-processor G5 which I just love to death.

Thanks!

1. Get them to send plain text, not html mail.
They should be able to do that. Most likely it is very graphic heavy, or has animations that have to load.

3. Oh well.
there must be something in their content that is incompatible. Let them know what is happening.

4. Just have Mail direct it to the Junk folder
There is probably some kind of attachment that is causing trouble. It seems to me I've had trouble when the message contains some javascript or flash animation.

6. I can't, b/c as soon as I highlight it, the program hangs
I can't do anything with it. I can't even see what it says--the message doesn't load in the box below the list of emails. It doesn't have any attachments.

The only thing I've been able to do with it is trash it--but I have to have an email above and below it in the list to trash, and then I can shift-select to get all three.

It's the damndest thing. I get all kinds of other newsletters and animations with no problem. Sometimes attachments don't load and I get the little blue box with the question mark, but nothing hangs up the program.

Thanks.

5. Go to your Mail Preferences
Click on Viewing. See if "display image and embedded objects in HTML messages" is turned on. If it is, uncheck it. See if that helps.

I know that Mail tends to show attachments inline if they're short.

7. I tried that, thanks. It didn't affect it.
Yes, I see embedded images & attachments all the time with other emails, no problem.

I finally hand-copied the email address to reply to and sent them an email to take me off their list. Hopefully they will.

8. Try opening it in a different email program like Thunderbird or Eudora
I know it's a bit of a pain to set up another email program, but you can then at least open up the email from CP and get taken off their list.
