So far, so good. It is well worth it folks. Get your checkbook out.

Be sure you have a DVD player because Tiger is a DVD.

Dashboard is just too cool, believe me it is a huge leap from 10.3X.

I haven't run spotlight yet, but I heard it is terrific.

Only two apps didn't work so far, GIMP and Desktop Manager. A new version for Tiger is in beta. I am using it now. Much better.

BTW, look in the Utilities folder for something called Grapher.

1. Does it speed things up for you?
Which OS had you been using before? I've got a dual G5 running Panther for my video editing set up. I don't like to mess with that one when I'm in the middle of a project. My secondary computer is an old B&W upgraded to G4 running Jaguar. I'm thinking about replacing that one with a Mini, but I'm waiting to hear how well Tiger and the core image stuff works on the Mini before I buy.

2. It seems pretty fast.
I'm on a dinosaur, a Dual 450 is my machine. I don't have enough VRAM to handle all the goodies in Tiger.

Make sure your B&W computer will run Tiger with the upgrade card.

I was running 10.3.9.

7. Faster than Panther definitely. . .on an old 1ghz G4 tower
faster boot, quicker User Interface. faster app launch, etc -- I am betting the mini will be very snappy.

Worth buying.

3. I installed this afternoon...just looking at it now.
I installed it, then had to leave for the evening. I'll probably look more tomorrow, as I'm exhausted, but it's very cool so far. Dashboard kicks ass.

It looks like the "seminar" is very busy, as Quicktime is very slow to access it (and I think it's slowing everything else down as well).

4. I got Tiger installed on a
G3 iMac DV SE 500 with only 384 of ram and this baby runs faster then it did with Pather. All I got to say is WOW.

5. I'm impressed with the speed
NVU opens with one bounce.

I am unhappy that Gimp.app didn't work

Desktop Manager didn't work but they have an upgrade. Once you get used to pagers, there is no turning back. Even Expose is no substitute.

I love it. It's faster than Panther and the dash is awesome. Spotlight kicks ass and it really makes Windows look like the POS it really is.

I put the Volcanocam , Version Tracker, Memory, Google and DopplerViewer widgets.

This could get out of hand.

14. Dashboard, as far as we can tell, is a CPU and RAM suck.
Edited on Wed May-04-05 09:20 PM by politicat
I'm so not pleased.

However, I'm getting annoyed with Apple for bundling so much crap with the OS (sound familiar?). I have an RSS ticker that works great, thanks; I can control iTunes from... the iTunes interface just fine. I do not care about most of the other things, and I happen to like having most of the CPU and RAM at my disposal.

As for Spotlight, I know where I put things. I don't need deeper indexing than what I have now.

I'm about || close to chucking it all and going to Yellow Dog or dual booting. The only things saving OS X right now are 1) Neverwinter Nights, 2)Baldur's Gate and BGII, and 3) Pages.

If I wanted a gazillion other add ons, I'd still be on a Windoze platform.

Oh, and the Jobs field of Time Estimation has gotten worse.

Edit: We're using decent machines: 2 1 GHz, 1 GB Powerbooks and 2 500 MHz, 640 MB iBooks. We're seeing speed slowdowns, not increases.

16. I haven't noticed much problem with Dashboard. I looked at
the Activity Monitor I didn't see it pulling much of anything when not in use. If you turn them off, they won't eat up memory. The only one I use daily is the weather, The others I turn off until i need them.

18. Having had it up now for a while...
Dashboard is a CPU/RAM suck, especially compared to Konfabulator. While I did turn everything off, save the RSS feed and the weather (which I used with Konfabulator) I still noticed a performance hit I didn't see with Konfabulator.

Thus, Dashboard has gone bye-bye.

I did play with Core Image Funhouse. Could we be seeing Apple releasing a Photoshop killer someday?

20. 10.4 is a DVD distribution
You have to pay about 10 bucks extra for a CD distribution, if my memory serves me correctly.

In any case, I think your CD should also read DVDs. I installed 10.4 on my G4 350MHz with the standard CD drive, so I would presume your CD drive should have the same capability.

23. loving it.
came installed on my brand-new 15" powerbook G4 (berklee college of music, you rock).

the only complaints i have with it are kind of stupid:

- it can take awhile to pick up my bluetooth mouse

- it wont let me keep the keyboard lit at all times :freak:

everything else is just great.

24. Just remember...
Folks,

Apple periodically updates its system software, applications, utilities, and security underpinnings via Software Update. Please run software update from time to time and look at what is available to upgrade.

Pay particular attention to the Security Udates - very important.

If you are an iPod fanatic (and who isn't) here are firmware upgrades / upgrades to iTunes available via SU.

The moral of this story is: stay current w/ you system software.
