I've got a big of a project, drawing a relatively simple street map of a small town for a pamphlet ... about ten streets in either direction with a few twists, but not many. A lot of straight lines and gentle curves.

If you were going to do it, what program would you use?

1. Adobe Illustrator
I'm not an expert at the program, but that's the one I would use.

2. Illustrator
In addition, I've also used PhotoShop and Free Hand (back in the day). Depends on how rudimentary or complex you want to make it I s'pose. If anyone else can suggest a cheaper program as an alternative; I'd be interested too.

3. Illustrator
I do maps all the time in Illustrator. Layers makes it easy to create a map for multiple uses. You can turn layers off and on as you need to show or not show stuff. Import a scan of a printed map on one layer and trace over it on another.

4. I'd consider ripping off Google Maps...
Google map the location, find the zoom level you like, and screen cap it... then edit the PDF in Photoshop if you like, or trace over it in Illustrator.

FWIW, it looks like Google Maps are done in Flash or something... impressive!!
