G4 display defaults at boot to 1024X768 instead of
the setting I want. It started that a short time ago. I run my monitor at 1280 X 960 60 mhz, and have been for some time.

How can I stop it from defaulting to that setting?

Also, when I boot, the CD tray comes out.

3. Found this on a forum
Have you gone into the Startup Disk panel of System Preferences and re-selected your startup volume? Just trying to rule out the possibility that the system is looking for a CD to boot from that's not present.

Open up a terminal window and type "ls /Volumes" (no quotes) and hit return. Make sure there isn't an alias to a CD in the list somewhere. If there is, you will need to remove it so the system isn't trying to mount it at startup.

Do you have a third-party mouse (Kensington, Logitech)? It seems that some older mouse drivers signal the CD-eject behavior (which, BTW, is to hold down the primary button while booting, ejecting the CD). Updated drivers correct this.

As for the video problem, try resetting your PRAM (hold down the P, R, Command & Option keys while rebotting). Hold them down until the third chime, then release. Then you should re-select your video settings (other settings may need to be re-selected as well).

4. I have a feeling it was my external CD burner dying.

I will isolate it from the system and restart later tonight or tomorrow.

When I was messing with the drive earlier, a dialog came up to name and burn a disc.

5. I removed the dead CD burner, an old Iomega 650,
and it booted without ejecting the cd tray, and the settings for my monitor worked.

So far, so good.
