Safari running on Tiger is driving me crazy
Recently installed Tiger on my 350 MHz G4. Safari hangs all the time -- I am getting really tired of that spinning beach ball!

Went to the apple forums, and followed these procedures posted by a user:

http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?13@217.1h6zayp4TiS.18@.68b8b1ef/1

1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu

2. Trash your Icons Folder:
 HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)

3. You might want to check all three "auto" preferences in Safari. Sometimes those lists gets very long and need pruning. (I turned all autofill boxes off, and have no problems.)

4. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.

If you're still having problems:

5. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.

Unfortunately, this only provides temporary relief.

I've had similar problems with Netscape. But not with IE.

Anyone have suggestions on what to do?

Thanks!
shireen

9. Not sure ...
I'm trying to figure out how it would help me ....

Some of the changes look cosmetic, some things (clearing cache, history) can be manually done. Has anyone used it, and have you noticed an increase in performance?

thanks!
shireen

11. Try it out..
IÕve used it for a few years mainly to keep the cache clear. When a friend complained he was having the same problems youÕre having, I suggested Safari Enhancer. He installed it and he no longer has the Òwaiting on the beachballÓ problem.
give it a try.

3. though I love Safari, and use it most of the time,
there are alternatives.

http://www.opera.com/ Now free.

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ Nice browser

http://hmdt-web.net/shiira/en little known but pretty good.

This used to be THE OSX browser. It started out being the browser for NeXt.
It is still around, it is still beautiful, it is still too expensive for a tight wad like me.

10. FireFox is pretty good at fixing problems
quickly. It is open source so there are a lot of eyes watching.

4. G4 Yikes or Sawtooth?
Running Tiger on Sawtooth G4 350MHz and don't have any problems.

448Mb RAM.

You might want to run the Disk Repair utility in case there's some file protection that's hosed up.

8. sawtooth
are you using tiger?

Onyx does the same thing, and before that I was using Disk Utility. Only a temporary solution.

I don't understand why I'm not having trouble with IE, after all, it's Microsoft! LOL!

12. You're not going to want to hear this, but:
I'd advise going back to System 9.

Call me a throwback if you will, but I have five computers in my office that are rock-solid and utterly stable, and all are running 9.2.2.

17. what browser do you run with 9.2?
I love 9.2, but can't find a browser that will work. I'm still using ie 5, at present, because it's the only 1 I can find.
