can anyone help me with external dvd problem/question
i just bought a used lacie external dvd player firewire
it looks to be an older model 300679 now sold on closeout

so ive plugged everything in
shows up in apple system profile but no icon on desktop nor in itunes

i have a dvd provided by a generous du soul with lots of good music and political books but have not a clue how to use this so that i can play the dvd
it wouldnt play on my emac combo drive (though it did play on a friends pc and my combo drive does play other dvds)

any guidance

i have toast titanium 6 and the player shows up there as well
how do i get this great dvd to play
can it be moved somehow to play through itunes

heeeelp
thank you

1. Insert the DVD into the player
It will probably pop up on your desktop then.

If it's got playable mp3 files on it, I think iTunes might automatically start up and begin playing the disk. Otherwise, click on one of the files on the disk.

Let us know how this turns out.

3. it doesnt show up at all on the desktop zorro
thank you for any help with this

on this external drive i tried out a maxell cd that has data on it and that showed up on the desktop (and kicked open itunes)

but this dvd does not show up
it does show up through toast titanium though and all i can try at this point is saving a disc image to mymusic folder
but i can see now that will take the rest of time to complete that (esp when i am grabbing at straws)

thank you again zorro

2. update:
i tested out a maxell brand cd and this worked fine on the external dvd player/recorder

the brand i am trying to run is memorex and that MAY be the issue
i looked online and seems other macs have trouble also with this brand

right now i will try to figure out a way to copy this dvd onto another brand since neither my internal nor now my external dvd will play this dvd
but a pc does

any suggestions are appreciated

4. Is it DVD+R or DVD-R?
The Memorex.

If memory serves me correctly, baseline Macs could only read -R disks.

You might want to take a look at downloading whatever the latest DVD driver software LaCie has on its website; that might also help.

6. i did the dvd update from lacie website
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 01:53 PM by faithnotgreed
it scanned for devices and then said there was no update needed

thanks again zorro for the help

do you happen to know about pcs at all
my friend has been able to read this dvd on her work pc
so im wondering how to copy this dvd onto a few cds

i am so far out of the pc world....

on edit: there were only a few updates available for the mac on the website
i think my dvd player is just too old for the updates there now

7. Sounds as if it's the DVD
Hook up your LaCie DVD to your friend's PC, and then use his DVD reader to burn a Maxell DVD copy with your LaCie.

That should take care of the problem.
