Cocktail helps keep things running smoothly

Macaroni does much the same, but itÕs at the root level
www.atomicbird.com/

These and a few others are sortalikekeeping your "oil changed"

2. I've used cocktail. Very good.
I have switched to OnyX.

You can do a lot in the terminal. Much of what those apps do are just unix commands.

4. You can do that by using cron, but why
do it when you have things like Cocktail.

OSX runs them at night automatically. You only really need them if you turn your computer off at night. These utilities are essential for laptop users.

5. A pretty little maintenance app that installs on the menu bar is Mainmenu

Cleans sweeps and polishes. Leaving OS X all shiny and sparkly, and it's free.

7. I just discovered Fruitmenu.

It does many things, but what I like most about it is that it adds an applications menu to the apple menu just like windows start menu had.

Need I say that I despise windows? but the ability to open any app with one mouse click is REAL handy.

http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/fruitmenu/

$10 shareware, with a fifteen day free trial.

Hey, Mikey likes it.

8. You know in the finder window you can drag an app to the
sidebar and it will become an alias. One click will open it.

10. you can also put your apps folder in the dock--> just like windoze!
You can access any app in one click by moving through the appls folder in your dock just like that bar on the bottom of windoze.

I know some people hate the dock but I keep mine pretty small, with mag mostly off, and I keep the dozen apps there that I use the most so they are easily accessible with one-click.

15. I've moved the dock to the top right, made it small and turned off
Genie and mag off. I put folders below the divider line next to the trash can.

If you haven't tried Desktop Manager, you should. I first learned about pagers when I used Linux. It's like having multiple monitors. http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/

16. Does it work under Tiger?

His page says it's alpha level. Have you encountered any problems with it?

On a personal level, can you point me to any web sites that will give the average climate and culture stuff (culture? Me?) for Tennessee? We are looking for a home that's not quite as warm as Florida, and the tourists and relocators are ruining everything here. Soon there won't even be enough water to drink.

17. I haven't had a lick of trouble with the app.
It is like having tabbed browsing for the desktop.

What part of Tennessee are you thinking about moving to?

It is hot there, but not tropical. there might be a day or two of ice and snow depending on your elevation.

My wife knows Tennessee much better than I.

23. I like it, too
One thing I like about it is that, in addition to everything else it does, it allows you to disable the "menu fadeout" effect and have it just disappear like it did pre-OS X. It seems like such a minor thing, but it's really helpful if you're running an older, slower Mac.

11. Spamsieve is the best for junkmail...
http://c-command.com/spamsieve/ (I use entourage- not mail.app but it works with everything)

I also LOVE Adium http://www.adiumx.com/

easywma.app is great for opening WMA files and coverting them to something else. (versiontracker.com has it)

Graphic Converter http://www.graphic-converter.net/ This is the BEST cheap photoshop replacement- I've used it for years and it just keeps getting better and better.

MacJournal http://homepage.mac.com/dschimpf/dev.html I;ve used this one for years too- there is still a free one you have to dig around for.

13. I emailed spamseive. They replied that it's not compatible with T'bird.

Too bad. I was looking for a GOOD spam filter. Guess I'll rely on the one built in to T'bird.

18. MP3 Trimmer
This wonderful little application lets you edit MP3 files without re-encoding.

As you lose significant quality each and every time you re-encode an MP3 file, this is a very important capability. I literally use this each day.

19. Audio Hijack Pro
Record anything audio on your mac into any format.

Want to save that iTunes protected song as an MP3? This will do it.

Want to record a phone conversation from Skype? This will do it.

Want to record a radio show at the same time each day? This will do it.

Want to record from a scanner but lose all the silent intervals? This will do it.

Want to record a lecture using your iBook's internal microphone? This will do it.

Want to process audio and add effects? This will do it.

Want to record your vinyl into MP3s and filter out hiss and pops? This will do it.

http://www.rogueamoeba.com/

I'd be lost without this.
