A question for Mac masters
I have an eMac with OS X running in it and now I can not get my
e mail up

instead of a full screen with my inbox showing e mail when I click on the mail icon
I just get a quarter screen
with a side bar open on the left of the mail screen saying
in out draft sent ..... and sometimes a prompt asking for my
mail ID ..... the only ID I know is my log in ID ..... if put
that it in ...... it crashes and says "mail system has quit running"

sometimes now it just comes on and crashes with the
"mail system has quit running" notice .....

I am unable to open any applications on the mail system tool
bar too.

thanx for your help

1. need more info- what version of X are you running?
have you done all software updates?

have you tried repairing your emac's permissions with disk utility?

How about rebooting- that sometimes solves problems.

The mail ID will be your email service/internet service login/password. I'm not sure what you mean about opening applications in the mail system tool bar. Do you mean mail is freezing up and you can't click on anything?

If there is still a problem with mail I would then look into trashing the .plist files for mail (but I don't know what those are off the top of my head) and then as a last resort, reinstalling OS X.

no new software ...... I did bring the adobe acrobat reader up

have you tried repairing your emac's permissions with disk utility?
no how do I do that?

How about rebooting? tried that

boy I don't know what my internet service password is ....
it was on a default setting ..... anyway to find it?

When I click on the mail icon and the mail tool bar comes up
if i try to click on anything ..... then I get a message ....
mail application has quit running ..... other systems have not been affected

thank you.

4. to repair permissions-
this is something you want to do every once in a while (once a month or when you have problems and also before/after installing major OS updates and new software).

Disk Utility is in your applications/utilities folder. Open it, select the "first aid" tab and then select your HD on the left. Then click "repair permissions" It might take a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer and how long it has been since you did it.

If you don't know your internet password call and ask your service provider. It has been a while since I used mail on 10.2.8 but I remember some version of mail would forget passwords every once in a while.

Good luck!

3. Check your mail preferences
Make sure your account is enabled, and take a look at the other preferences and modify if required.

It's been a while since I was on 10.2.8, so I can't give you much more advice than that -- mail has a different look and feel with 10.4.
