Replace battery on Gen 1 iPod or get a used one?
I have an original iPod at home whose battery died (didn't qualify for replacement) and I have 2 choices: Get a replacement battery for $59 (I'm not opening it myself) or get a used later generation iPod.

I'd rather not spend more than $100, and I don't really want a shuffle.
Is this doable?

Which is a better idea?

1. get a new battery for the G1 iPod...
they are easy to install, with directions w/ pictures or you could have someone install it for you.

my G1 iPod is almost 4 years old and I've haven't filled it up w/ music.

2. Sonnet Technology has replacement 1G iPod batteries
They just came out last week, iirc--up to 78% longer running time, and they come with the tools required and an instruction video on how to replace it yourself. $39.95 direct, shipping excluded.

3. Definitely, just replace the battery
And the procedure isn't hard at all. I replaced my Gen 1 battery a few months ago when it'll only hold only a couple hours worth of charge. As mentioned, Sonnet has batteries. And so does Newertech: http://www.newertech.com/ipod

They both provide good instructions that you (or someone else who'll do it for you) can follow along.

Oh, if you want it to be professionally done, try this site for more info: http://www.techrestore.com/xcart/home.php?cat=271

I'd rather not get a used iPod of any generation from a stranger. :)

4. Thanks everyone!
I think I am definitely getting a replacement battery - a 2100mAh model for $20!

It'll be good to have the iPod back again!
