So, anyone built, or use, a Mac-based PVR?

I can't get TiVo on my cable system, and frankly hate paying subscription fees. So I was thinking of buying an older Mini, hooking it up to my external drive and doing a PVR thing (I use a laptop that travels with me sometimes, so it's not a good PVR base) I was thinking something like the Elgato (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6044001/wo/FL1fJRrqgqj426TRPZXyd9upVOt/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.1.3) anyone have any experience with this?

or even better, anyone have experience building a Mac one? I want to be able to record TV and burn it to DVDs if need be, ever since my VCR blew out, I can't record tv shows that my girlfriend always wants to watch, and I do not want to buy a VCR, for the love of god.

1. I have Formac TV Studio.

It works fine but it's not cheap. Also to do any amount of recording, you will probably need an external HD. They do have new products coming out too.
