volume issues

anyone having the volume get really loud, suddenly?
i keep doing the disc repair to reset it.
is there something else i could do?
not sure why this is happening.
(G4 laptop, running 10.3.9)

you would just trash the sound preferences and restart. If that didn't work, maybe run DiskWarrior.
Never encountered this problem with Panther or Tiger.

it's the sounds- like the "new mail" ping they're just what recording people call 'over-modulated' like it's too loud for the speakers
i tried deleting the sound preferences file and waiting until today to restart but it did it again, half way through the day
oh well
when it does it- i just turn the volume halfway down
