Apple debuts the new Intel-based Xserve, which Apple says is 5x faster than previous generation Xserves. Features a smaller processor, less cooling due to power efficient ships, redundant power supplies, and up to 2TB of storage. Pricing starts at $3000 (standard config is 1GB RAM/80GB drive/dual-dual-core 2.66GHz chips), about $300 cheaper than comparable Dell server. Apple will also offer 1 million BTO configurations. 1. Sad, but true!

Not because the new machines aren't great, they are, but because my nine-month old PowerMac dual-core 2.3 is now officially old technology. It still works great, but if I want to use Aperture I'll need to upgrade the sorry-ass nVidia 6600 that came with the box and the only option is a flashed PC card from Strange Dogs.

2. Being retired that means I can't afford the Mac Pro. That sucks.

I am scrambling to afford a Mac Mini Duo.

I like that Leopard will come with virtual desktops. I can't live without them.

Strange Dogs? I've heard of smalldog.com, but not strange dogs.

3. Nice but out of my range as well!

Given the huge gap between the iMac and the new Mac Pro, there's a logical place for a more powerful headless Mac, let's hope that Apple fills it. A dual-core Conroe, room for two hard drives, one optical drive, and up to 4Gig of RAM would be a good place to start, that and a real PCI-express slot for a decent graphics card so I could run Aperture.

4. Not sure if they need it. Wouldn't the MacbookPro

fill that gap nicely? He may be leaving that gap for a few quarters will tell them if a mid priced machine is needed.
