Just got a new 64-bit imac

Man this thing is sweet. Lightning quick and gorgeous to look at. I'm on a budget so I had to get the smallest screen, the 17 incher, but it's still beautiful. I wish I could have gotten the 24 inch one though. Oh well, maybe next time.

1. Damn you!

According to Apple's shipment tracking, my 24" iMac is due for delivery on 20 September (five days ago) and the shipment is "on schedule" (uh?). According to the carrier's tracking, however, it's been sitting on the tarmac at Pudong International for five days. I'm not pleased.

2. That is so not okay

I'd call and give them bloody hell. But I'm jealous of your 24" model. As for myself I picked mine up directly from our local Apple Store, which happens to be in our local mall less than 1 mile away from me. So, no waiting. Goody! But they had a 24 incher on display, and I can tell you, you are going to love it. I'm in love with my 17 incher, but it pales in comparison to the 24. It will be worth the wait, I assure you.

3. I was going to complain

But it's finally arrived on the right continent! I promise not to be one of those Apple fanboys who post every movement of their tracking info, though.

I have an old 17" G4 iMac, the iLamp style, and personally I find that design more pleasing than these new models: probably the best design Apple have had, visually, with the possible exception of the cube. But 1 GHz doesn't cut it any more. I'm like a kid on xmas eve right now...

And you're right, it doesn't cut it anymore. I'll still keep it around for those rare occasions when I actually do computing outside of my home (I realized that the need for that was far less than I'd previously thought, which was why I went for the better bang for the buck with the imac), but it has now been upstaged. Yeah, I liked the sunflower design a lot too. It sure didn't last long did it? But one of the things you'll notice with this new imac design is how little space it takes up. It's almost like having a vertical laptop instead of a traditional desktop. I actually don't miss my powerbook at all because this thing is actually quite easy to move around (I haven't found a permanent place for it yet), and with a wireless network getting online is no problem.

5. The desk space is one of the attractions

I don't have a lot of space, and since the current iMacs can be wall-mounted, and of course take a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I can have a completely clear desk when I need it.

6. I like the design of those, but there is a flaw or two

While the gooseneck thing has held up a lot better than I thought it would over time, the design unfortunately puts all the air intake vents around the bottom edge, just barely above the desk. In the environments I've used them, this seems to just pull in all the dust (and any other particulates) from the desk right into the machine. I've had to open mine up about every 3-4 months to clean the dust bunnies out of them. It's the only Mac I've ever owned that has shut itself off due to overheating (repeatedly) due to getting all clogged with dust (and dog hair, etc...).

Otherwise, I did always like the flexibility with with you can position the monitor, however.
