What are your favorite games for Mac OS X ?
I'm a fan of strategy and builder games.

--Civilization (I, II and III) is probably the best series ever.

--Sim City was my all-time favorite until Sim City 3 or 3000 or whatever it was called. I found it to be buggy and unweildy to play. Unfortunately, earlier versions didn't run reliably in the Classic Environment.

--I used to love SimFarm, but it hasn't been current for over a decade now.

--Railroad Tycoon was fun, if a bit buggy, but again, it requires Classic.

--I enjoyed the Myst series for awhile, but I don't have that much time to devote to one game anymore.

--Again, more than a generation ago, there were a couple of terrific baseball games on the Mac. I don't want to be a virtual batter or pitcher--I'd much rather just go down to the batting cages and do that for real. I want a good manager-general manager game simulator. MicroLeague Baseball was a great game.

--About the time I realized I had sent my Sims to the toilet five times since I myself first felt the urge and now I was in severe abdominal distress, I found the Sims to be just kind of creepy.

I have had several first-person shooter FSP type games, but I don't find them relaxing. I get to fight demons all day IRL. Arcade games and the like are pretty frustrating since I don't have a game controller of any type.

What are your favorites?

1. I don't actually HAVE any real OSX "faves". I'm still catching up to all the 90'sWare.
I greatly enjoy the online "ThinkTanks", (best 2 thousand hours of fun
I ever spent $20 for)...

But most of the games I'm playing these days are the pre-OSX classics.
So much of the stuff I couldn't afford when I was a kid is FREE now,
downloadable "abandonware".

Frankly, it's gonna take DECADES before I'm finished playing all
the OLD games, and by then the current OSX stuff will probably
be free online as well.

(Although, I gotta admit, the "Otto Matic" game that came free with this
little iMac was pretty darned ADDICTIVE for the first year or so, lol!)

8. They just came out with an expansion pack
I can hardly wait to play it. :)

I've really enjoyed IV. I'd say it's one of the best in the franchise and as far as I know, I've played every single version. Game play is very well balanced. AI's are well done and there seems to be a big improvement in the way international relations are handled. You finally get to see why your enemies get so mad at you, for example.

If you liked the previous versions, I'm pretty sure you'd love this one.

10. Yeah, it's a processor hog
I can't play it on my Mini. I have to break out the MacBook Pro if I want to play it. It's the only piece of software I have that really makes my MacBook work hard.

4. Hmm, let's see
Solitaire til dawn is always the old standby from the OS 7.5.3 era (upgraded to OS X of course)

Call of Duty, and COD: UO

I'm still trying to find time to finish Baldur's Gate II, SoA and ToB.

Diablo II

Atomic Cannon

At one point, Starcraft was so addictive. Recently though, I reloaded it with the OS X patch but after a short while, I was like, meh, and unloaded the game.

I hear you on the Myst series. At one point, I was Myst everytime all the time. I sort of ground to a halt with Myst 4. Like BGII, just do have that kind of time anymore to focus on one game. Myst 4 is relagated to the unfinished pile. One day though.

Speaking of one day - one day some one's gonna make an OS X patch to Deus Ex and all will be right in the world again. :D I kid. I kid.

5. The Escape Velocity series is pretty high on my list

Though I think I liked EVO better than EV:Nova -- the plots seemed a bit more open ended (except for the Vell-os arc). Lots and lots of replay value on the whole series, though.

Played the Sims 1 games (and most of the add-ons) -- eventually got bored with it, but ended up buying Sims 2 anyway. Sims 2 runs WAY TOO SLOW to be any fun.

SimCity 4 provides a bit of distraction now and then, but once the cities get to a certain size, speed again becomes an issue (this is on a late model G4).

Civ III has probably had the most re-play value for me. I still find interesting challenges in that one, but don't play very often.

I own and have played both the Starcraft/WarCraft, etc series, but don't really enjoy playing them much.

I've been spending a lot more time working on my own game project lately. I am a software programmer by trade, and the game project is sort of a side hobby at the moment. Unlike how one is 'supposed to' design a software product (doing market surveys, focus groups, etc... to find out what people want), I'm just trying to design a game I like playing. I have working prototype of an intersteller 3D FP-RPG going, but need to solve a few gamerules issues and add more detail and depth to the environments. EV and the old Traveller paper and pencil RPG game have been my major inspirations so far (along with Elite, I suppose, but I only played that once). If I ever finish it, maybe some of you will play it someday (I already sell several non-game shareware products out there, so it's not as unlikely as it might sound).

11. Burning Monkey Solitaire and Glider

Those are my two favorite games for the Mac. I liked Prince of Persia when I played it on my SE/30, but I don't think there's an OS X version.

Glider was released by Casady & Greene and when they went bankrupt the author, John Calhoun, released the game for free to everyone.

See the link below for the free Glider links:

There's a free limited version of Burning Monkey Solitaire, too. But there are more jokes and games with the pay version:
