Apple experts!! I need help
Yesterday I changed my little house name on my hard drive and now it changed everything
I lost my keychains, folders displayed on my desktop, widgets, bookmarks, the picture on my desktop.

How do I get that info back I know it is still on my computer.

thanks.

2. I'm not an expert, but I've never had a Mac problem that their support
pages didn't address.

Try this URL, which used the search string "change name home computer," I think.

4. The little house is you user account folder
Have you tried changing it back to what it was? If you forgot what it was named goto system preferences > accounts look at the short name and and use that to rename you home folder.

Hope this works.

6. 1. Why did you change your little house name? 2 your bookmarks are here:
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 06:10 PM by emulatorloo
this is the pathway of folders where your bookmarks are

user/library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

User being your user directory (folder), which you call your little house.

You really should not have changed the name of that folder. (did you try changing it back?) The name of it is based on the name you entered as your user name when you first got your computer.

Probably changing it back will fix it.

Now, If you already made a new user directory, you can just copy that file Bookmarks.plist to the same location in your new user directory.

If this does not make sense to you I would advise you call Apple tech support.

BEST OF LUCK!!!!!

9. a helpful site:
www.macosxhints.com

(you'll note I"m one of the founding members)

a lot depends on what you did exactly to make your home folder (the house) disappear.

If you're still able to use your computer, see if it will let you change the name back:

1. double-click on the hard drive icon. in that window, you'll see a "users" folder. Open that folder and see if your original home folder is there, keeping in mind it might be named differently now.
2. attempt to change the name. If it tells you you don't have permissions to do so, you can try several things:

= If you still have your original OSX dvd or cd, put it in your drive and reboot holding down "c".
instead of reinstalling, quit the installer and then pull down under "file" to find "disk utility".

open that. select your hard drive. choose "repair permissions". reboot. see if that fixes it.

if not, feel free to go to macosxhints.com....one of the best help sites for macosx. Someone there can help you.

11. do go to the site, though if that doesn't work, they ALL know more than me...hehe
do a search first, someone else might have had the same problem.

You can also create an admin account and attempt to repair your home folder. That's a bit more complicated, but someone there should be able to help you.
If nothing else, you can create a NEW user account, and copy over the prefs and plists.

you can also do a search for "bookmark" and see if you can find your old bookmarks and simply re import them.

can be found in:

user/library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist

I am hoping IChing will call Apple Technical Support - it sounds like someone needs to help step by step/

14. Which version of OSX are you using?
Some things changed at 10.3

Here is a good explanation of things from Apple's web site:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106824

I'm guessing that all the information is still there, but you may need to log in as an administrator or root to get it.
