Upgrade from OS9.2 to 10.4.10 HELP.
Just got a G5. I want to use the old G4 for accounting, but new software requires OSX. What's the protocol to upgrade from 9 to 10.4.10? I have a 10.4.10 upgrade but the G4 isn't reading the install.

I am obviously computer challenged. I just want to sit down, boot it up and run my graphics software.

1. before you upgrade anything, make sure the data is backed-up. When
you say you have a 10.4.10 upgrade, you mean you have a full-version and you want to upgrade. I'm trying to make sure that you don't have an 'upgrade' version that is expecting OS X to already be installed.

Is the case that the OS X was read by your OS9 -- since at that point the device drivers where there -- and in the middle of the install, it stopped reading the OS X disc? Meaning, your drive is so old that there are not OS X device drivers on the install disk for it.

Lastly, the disk itself, is it a DVD or CD?

2. Upgrade version IS expecting OSX to already be installed.
Upgrade was purchased and downloaded on line. The original OSX disK is DVD.

3. then, if you're going from OS9 to OSX, you must have a full copy of OSX.
then, run your upgrade to bring it up to the version you want.

If I'm following this correctly, that should solve your problem.

4. Did you startup from the OSX Install disk?
Insert the Install disk into your computer, restart the machine while you are holding down the "c" key. Keep holding down the key past the startup chimes and until you see the gray apple with a spinning gear below it. Then you will be able to run the install program.

And as has been said, make sure you back up any important information...files, internet login info, etc.

(I'm a little confused. I think you said you have an OSX disk. Right?)

5. What happens when you can't install?
What does your mac say?

(Once upon a time another person had trouble installing OS X...

it might be relevant, it might not.)

6. Are you running the latest version of OS9? You may have to install firmware.

You may have to upgrade to 9.2 before you can install OSX (provided, as the others have said, that you have a full version and not an update). That's what I had to do, to install Panther on my G3 (with the help of a G4 processor card and a program called X-Post Facto). And I just installed Tiger yesterday--sorry, couldn't wait for Leapoard. Check out this page at Apple.com.
