How do you guys think is the best way to completely
remove programs from a Mac?

Is there more to it than simply dragging the icon from the applications file to the trash? :)

1. That's the way I've always done it
There may also be a preference file associated with the program. I've never had a residual file from a program screw anything up though.

3. Have you looked in /Library/Receipts?
For packages installed using Installer (which isn't all packages), if you navigate to the /Library/Receipts directory in the finder you'll find a pkg file corresponding to the package. Double-click on this (which will run Installer), but don't hit the 'continue' button. Instead, go to file->show files. This will give you a list of the files in the package. It won't include preferences files and suchlike created when you run the application, but you might want to keep those around anyway so that your settings will be intact if you decide to reinstall it later. Quit Installer when you've read the list. You can also use Spotlight to search for the app's name, and hover the pointer over the things it finds to get the pathnames.

5. I just tried to look, but I can't find the directory. Is it an
obvious directory under finder?

Sorry for the dumb question..... I recently switched to Mac from PC.

7. You're probably looking in the wrong Library directory
In the finder window, in the sidebar on the left you should see an icon for your internal disk (unless you've changed finder's preferences), probably labelled "Macintosh HD". Double-click on that, and then on the Library folder which appears, and finally on Receipts.

4. I use AppDelete. it's donationware.

It removes all files of a program and puts them in a folder in the trash. I've been using it for a month or so and it's worked great.
