OK, could I have a bigger headache right now? Uh......
NO!

Anyone have suggestions concerning what I should do about my Mac Mini not booting up?

It froze up on something. I tried to force quit all of the open applications, but force quit didn't work.

Then out of frustration, turned the power off.

When the power came back on, it decided it was not going to boot, so it just hangs and hangs.

At the very least, I want to rescue my 2 gigs of MP3's.

I just can't figure out what hung it up.

Any thoughts :)

1. How many times have you tried powering it down?
Something (I never determined what) caused this little G3 iMac
to "freeze" a few times the other year, and it would just
hang and hang until the THIRD time I turned it off and back on.
Sometimes it took 4 tries, but NEVER just 2!

I suspect it wasn't getting along with the version of FireFox I
was using at the time, but it hasn't happened since I started using
Applejack™ to clean the system (twice a month or so), so I never
bothered tracking down the definitive source of the problem.

2. Try a verbose boot
Edited on Sat Nov-03-07 04:28 PM by moggie
Hold down command-V while booting until it starts displaying text. You'll get to see the progress of the boot, which may tell you where the problem lies. If that doesn't work, put the install media in the drive and hold the D key during boot to launch hardware test, which can help you find any hardware problems.

Here's a list of boot key combos for Intel Macs:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303124

Here's the main support page for the Mini:

http://www.apple.com/support/macmini/

There are troubleshooting links from that page.

Apple's support forums for the Mini are here:

http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=158

ETA: I should say that by "install media" I mean the media which came with the Mini, not any subsequent OS upgrade you might have. And use another machine to read the Apple hardware test README file from that before using it.

3. Apple has a few documents on what to do when your computer won't boot
Start up in Safe Mode:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393

Your Mac won't start up in Mac OS X (Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464

If you can boot from the original Install Disk, you can run the Disk Utility application to repair permissions and run disk repair. You should also have a disk with the Apple Hardware Test to see if there is a hardware problem (probably not, but you could have a failing hard drive).

Your best bet would be if you have DiskWarrior. That can fix just about any software problem. Start up from the DiskWarrior disk and let it fix the problem.

BTW, in the future, if your computer freezes, you can shut it down by holding down the power button for 5 seconds.
