Got a new disk today for time machine

1. Time machine is going to save a lot of people a lot of headaches in due time

We all know most people are less than rigorous in their backups...right.
Guilty.

When we decide to go 10.5, I will get a sep drive just for the network server. Every mac saving to that, on a gigabit enet + wifi network.

Beyond style, or even ease of use - they took a MAJOR problem for users and solved it in an easy and very cool way.
This is the type of thing that apple does well.

Is anyone out there syncing folders on multiple computers?
I have not looked closely at that, but it is an issue between my laptop and tower - having two copies of stuff gets to be confusing and a hassle.

2. And you sir are not even dealing with a handheld PC

or a windows machine to boot

Next software package... syncing for my HPC... I love the little bugger and at times far more portable than the Macbook... and trust me, having to go through the WIN machine can and is a pain in the rear end

3. Apple should make time machine for xp/vista/*nix. That's Nobel peace prize material ;)

I do have 2 pcs in our network (+4 macs) but no handhelds. They each have pretty finely designated roles, but my laptop has to multitask for several of the tasks that in the studio are in specially configured systems. So it has to be a bit of everything- files get duplicated a lot...so I think we are in similar levels of complexity. And organizational skills are not my strong suit. ;)

6. Using Time Machine with a network drive can be dangerous

Obviously it can be made to work safely, since that's what Time Capsule is, network-attached storage. But numerous people have tried using SMB or AFP-shared filespace for Time Machine backups, and had various worrying problems. Since it's important that you can rely on your backups, be sure to do some research before opting for your own network solution. This thread on macoshints.com is one starting point.
