So, I got Tiger installed on the old G3!
Amazing! I'm so proud! I'm running 10.4.11 now.

I ended up having to install an internal DVD drive, but that was actually pretty fun. Got to vacuum out the inside of the computer with my Hoover upright.

Everything seems to be fine and very stable so far.

Next phase of operations: I want to use my new (8G) iPod with this computer. Think it can be done without a USB 2.0?

(I plugged it in once, and the computer said that this media wasn't initialized; do I want to initialize it? I hastily ejected and lived to fight another day.)

1. Victory! You are a testament to frugality and inventiveness. Right on.
Internal dvd drive is a good move - DVD-R I hope, so you can write dvds/cds and make backups?

Yes, it is nice working on the newer macs (blue towers on up) compared to the old days, they have ade it easy to get around for the most part.
Partner and i did a new drive. ram and dvd in a 17" rounded base imac about 2 years ago - kinda hard, but so logical, and impressive build quality.

I still think you should get a usb 2.0 card. Installation will take all of 5 minutes or less. Shop wisely, and you will need no drivers on most of them.

If your ipod is synced to another computer already, you may have to do some transfer fiddlin' - but if it is new and never connected to a computer, then it does need initializing. This will wipe anything that is on it- if it was loaded from another computer, you should have the originals on it, so it should be safe. The real question is where do you keep you main music files? If you want these on your g3 (or they are there already) then initailize and update the ipod software and stuff it full of musical goodness.

If you have another computer with usb 2.0 you can charge it without harming anything - just make sure the "auto-sync" funstions are turned off in itunes, so it won't try to sync without your prompting it...

I am glad this went well for you.

2. Thank you so much!
Yes, it's a DVD-R. I'm kind of looking forward to being able to reorganize some stuff in there.

Truthfully, I have done no research at all re: USB 2.0 cards. It'll take me some time, but I'll probably look at doing that.

So, this is a new iPod and it hasn't been hooked up to any computer yet. I shouldn't fear the initialization, because there's nothing on it to wipe out. I've always used the computer for storage of music files--the older iPod is a 2G, and it never made sense to me to keep a lot on it.

Thanks again for your advice and encouragement!

3. You are welcome. Here is a link to a plug and play usb2 for 6.95
http://www.buyextras.com/synecchusb20.html?gclid=CPenvtHGqJECFQhFgQodWDStWw

It has an NEC chipset, said to work in 10.3 and up and has no "deep sleep" problem...

Here is info from a mac site:

Not all USB PCI cards willwork in a Mac. A USB 2.0 PCI card is what you need. Best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fw_usb_card_deep_sleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, Tiger doesn't need the drivers.

All of these Cards are NEC chipset based

5. That's great! I heard someone say usb1.0 would not work, but it does on my imac.
Now you would need it only if you tire of the transfer speed.
Upshot of that is, you can consider it at your own pace.

Happy for your success.
After doing battle in GDP (and I am non-aligned, just battling bullshit) to help a fellow DUer is a healing act of karma.
So, thank YOU, tofunut.

enjoy
