I managed to get into a Finder loop today with a downloaded software update; Finder & the dock kept flashing on and off every couple of seconds, and nothing would stop it. Tried rebooting, moving everything off the desktop (because I've read that corrupt files on the desktop can cause that behavior)... nothing. Both my regular account and the machine admin account were caught in this, because I'd authenticated in order to do the update.
So after 3 hours of Googling and reboots, I finally gave up and tried a Time Machine restore from last night's backup. I was very nervous about it at first, but the process was really pretty straight forward once I found the "Utilities" menu item from the Leopard install disk.
It took about 2 hours, and so far, everything seems to be working okay. I am immensely relieved, to say the least!
