Suddenly having outgoing mail trouble

Since I've had it, my .mac mail has worked just fine.

Now, since yesterday, I can't send outgoing mail apparently. I create a mail note as usual, same addresses I've always used. And they just sit in the Outgoing Mail box. I keep getting the "Mail needs your attention!" warning.

When I go to adjust mail preferences, all seems the same.

Anyone have any ideas?

1. I had a problem where I was getting mail, but it was all empty

I restarted and the problem went away. Since I pretty much never restart except when an app installation requires it, it never occurred to me that might help. I went maybe two weeks with this issue making me more and more pissed off.
