Anybody tried an SSD in a Mac?
They're still way too pricey for my tastes, but some folk claim SSDs can really speed the machines up

1. Pricey, with poor write times... most SSDs are in 2.5" format as well,
and there's no adapter so the drive hangs in the Mac Pro's chassis... :(

3. But disk read operations vastly outnumber disk write operations...
and SSDs are near-instantaneous at reads compared
to moving-head disk drives, and not too shabby at short
write operations either (because no "seeks" are ever
required).

4. You have a pro: what are your disk IO speeds? I think mine are in the range 100-125 mb/s
OCZ claims sustained 500 mb/s read and 400 mb/s write for its 1tb Z pcie ssd

No way I'm dumping several grand into a pcie ssd today -- but with any luck I might have an affordable one in a year or two

5. These folk have an OS X compatible pci ssd with R/W of 1.4/1.2 gb/s

2. I've heard second-hand reports of excellent performance.
Our next Mac (whenever that comes along) will almost-certainly have one.

6. Are you talking about an ssd in place of the regular hd in a notebook?
I've thought about swapping out the hd in my macbook for an ssd, but at $350 with reduced disk space I'm sure sure it would be worth it right now

7. Yes.
I'm pretty sure I can live with a "mere" 250 GiB
and the SSDs are much faster than moving-head
disk drives.
