But with a 6 month cycle, I suspect it is best to wait until the end of next month... the model might drop to a proper price or be supplanted with a model that would give the quad-core i7 HP lappy a run for its money -- one I almost bought...

4. True. They did the small update in June...

Nearly bought that model today. It's the only one that, with a 17" screen, has a proper resolution (1920x1200).

I could save $600 by going refurb and getting AppleCare instead of paying full price and adding best buy's warranty...

But, with January, and their updates usually being 6 months apart, there is no pressing need to splurge.

I saw the almost-comparable Windows laptops. Better in a couple ways, but it's a lesser CPU, made of plastic, and lower resolution despite having a faster video subsystem with more RAM. Plus, going back to Windows, any money I save from hardware gets spent on Photoshop filters for Windows - the net price, either way, for me, is the same.

So, yeah, January - I can wait. I hope Apple is cooking up something good -- the 17" MBP, with a TN-based panel, makes precision photo editing pointless, but there are other genuinely useful things it can do...

6. Since I've retired I've had to go from a Pro model down to a

mac Mini. It needs more RAM, and I will do that in a month or so. I'm without Photoshop too. Leopard killed the old PS7, so I do everything on GIMP.

It's a lot better than the GIMP 1.2 I used back in the good old days.

8. I have a 15.4" MBP and a Mac Pro (single quad) already... The 17" DOES have legitimate

pluses (e.g. 1920x1200 resolution for more screen estate for designing pages, though I wouldn't do photo editing on it due to it being a 6-bit TN panel...)

But with the quarter ending and Apple likely to put out a major update by February, I think it's worth waiting for. (I can easily see the current 17" model going down to $1999.)

Then again, the next series model might be 17.3" and have a naff 1600x900 resolution.

10. I'm looking at 1920 x 1200 right now and it's great. I'm not sure I understand the issue with photo

editing, but I don't know exactly what you do with it. I assume you are a professional graphics designer. I always look straight on at the screen, but maybe I'm the only one who can live with this, and I prefer LCD aesthetically, but maybe I shouldn't! Maybe I am too forgiving of color differences in the hard print. It is true that it goes hinky vertically. Do you prefer the glossy or matte screen and would that make a difference? My understanding has been that the TN 6-bit screens Apple uses are the BEST TN 6-bit screens out there, but maybe I have just fallen for propaganda. I know they use different manufacturers. I'm talking quality control.

I dare not give advice on the advisibility of waiting.

12. I'm in school right now, training to be a graphics designer. (Already a pro photographer)

I do know the June refresh MBPs have even better panels, which means it's another reason for me to buy sooner rather than later. Not that my current 15" (early 2009) is anything to sneeze at; the larger size is for work area and ergonomics...

Looking straight ahead is definitely the best for any TN panel. :D

I do prefer matte when possible; the glossy screens reflect light and can make images look brighter than how they should be.


Am I British? I wish! My ancestry is, however. Predominantly Scottish, actually... Additionally, growing up watching lots of British programming on PBS helped me cultivate an appreciation for the language, both written and verbal... Remember that "Where's Waldo" game? Well, with me it's similar except the fun part is to decipher when I use UK vernacular and when I go back into "American mode"... :D
