Magic mous, yea or nay?
I'm very happy with my Apple wireless keyboard and now considering the Magic Mouse. What do you think about that? Is it worth the money?

1. personally
I dislike all Apple mice; I always use Logitech (I have a Bluetooth Logitech mouse at the moment)

but I haven't tried this one, so I don't know.

2. If I could find a good bluetooth trackball, I'd go with that.
This looks pretty good, but I will have to give it a try first.

3. I'm not buying one. I got an Apple mouse with one of my Macs; within
a few months the trackball stopped working. So I bought a replacement; within a few months, the track ball stopped working. I like the OS, and so far the boxes themselves have worked reliably -- but II've decided Apple can be asinine about peripherals: theere's also the famous Apple "screw you! we've changed connectors again!" philosophy

No, thank you. I've have to see hundreds of rave reviews before I ever buy another shitty overpriced Apple mouse

6. These weren't wireless; they were the previous Apple mouse with a
scroll nub, and the scroll nub died quickly on both

So I can't discuss battery life; I simply say the Apple mice I bought were crap. I also had an earlier model Apple mouse at work that stopped working because its clicker jammed. I have a low opinion of Apple mice

7. My wife is still using a Mac puck mouse from 2000. It's ugly, but fits her hand.

5. I don't "get" the Magic Mouse
My work machine, a MacPro, has a Logitech VX Revolution mouse that I love.

Wireless, but not bluetooth. Lots of buttons (I have them all programmed for my CAD system). About six weeks per AA battery. Not a moment's hassle.

My MacBook has a Rocketfish bluetooth mouse. It looks very Mac-like but works like any good scroll wheel two button mouse.

8. I have two Kensington trackballs. One is that old Turbo pro

This is what I'm using now:

I have arthritis and moving a mouse around hurts, the trackball allows me to use just my fingers. The Mighty Mouse seems to need less movement than needed with a regular mouse. I have to put my keyboard and mouse on a plank on my lap because reaching hurts too. That cuts available space for a mouse. The plank has to fit between the arms of the chair, The Apple keyboard and the trackball fit well.

9. It took me a few days to get used to it, but now I love it.
I also have an Apple Wireless Keyboard. Don't miss the number pad at all and love the extra room.

And a single gel wrist rest helps keep me ergonomic.

If you get a Magic Mouse, get 'MagicPrefs.' It is free and it is essential if you ask me. Adds Tons of functionality and it's free: http://magicprefs.com

I also have a Microsoft Trackball Explorer (circa 2001). I used to use it religiously for when I was doing heavy design work, but have not been using it as much since the Magic Mouse. There is a cult around these things and they go for anywhere between $150 and $500 depending on condition. People are petitioning Microsoft to put it back into production.

10. I don't know why trackballs aren't more popular. I gave one to a friend with MS.
He couldn't work a mouse when he had a flareup.

Come On Kensington, make a bluetooth trackball with a full sized ball.

15. Love my magic mouse, love the trackball
and I use them both. I think it depends on your set-up. I have my computer next to my chair so there is no desk. I use the magic mouse more because I am not tethered to the computer by a cord. If I'm playing a game or need faster control I use the trackball. by the way, you can have them both connected with no ill effects! Cool.

16. I've narrowed it down to:
I'd have to learn to use my thumb instead of three fingers.

This looks good, but it has a dongle, The ball is the right size and for me easy to use.

Trackball is small but it is Bluetooth

Are you sure you don't mean the Apple Mouse or Apple Wireless Mouse? They were prone to quick deaths.

21. Yeah it's wireless and has the little bump on top
I thought that it was called the magic mouse...but, it was longer ago than that. My system is a Mac pro 1,1.
It's too bad about that mouse, when it worked, it was really nice to use.

24. That was the "Mighty Mouse". The mouse function is very reliable but the...
"track pea" tends to clog with dirt quite easily. It can be cleaned, but
that's still a nuisance. The new Magic Mouse with the touchpad top
surface won't suffer that fate.

Edited on Sun May-23-10 07:15 PM by rocktivity
I've had carpal tunnel issues, and it's so much easier on my hand.

I'm using a Logitech, and I don't mind that it's wired--the batteries on wireless mice always seem run out when I need them to least, LOL!

Here's a wireless Logitech optical:

23. It's my elbow and shoulder that any mouse hurts. With the trackball it
only takes small movements of the hand or middle and ring finger to do what I need to do.
