I am really proud of myself. I moved my OS from the original 320G drive to a new 1T drive.

I have a MacPro. I bought the machine with a minimal hard drive and minimal memory and upgraded both with aftermarket stuff. I added 12G more memory to bring it up to 14G. I also installed two 1T drives. After all this time, the 320 drive was getting a little full with apps. The first 1T drive has my data on it. The second 1T drive has my time machine on it. I wanted to put my OS and apps on the new 1T drive.

I downloaded CarbonCopy for free and cloned the drive. It worked perfectly and effortlessly. I reset the OS to boot from the new drive and voila! It all works!

I can't even imagine a PC being this easy to do.

1. You could simply have done a restore with Time Machine, too

Do a Time Machine backup of old drive
Restore to the new drive
Boot from the new drive

2. I read somewhere that Time Machine fails to copy some specific file

Some internet site said that Time Machine is set to not copy something or another rendering a restore unable to boot. Lots of site raved about Carbon Copy and by damn, it worked.

It seems to me that the whole IDEA of Time Machine is to restore a trashed boot drive.

4. I've used TM to recreate my boot drive on another disk

It worked fine for me. I'd forgotten TM doesn't backup all files; I think this has the effect that the first boot after a TM restore can take quite a while, as certain files are rebuilt

CCC may be a good alternative; I use it for a second backup

You can also use disk utility to clone a drive. I did this for a while. The disadvantage of disk utility, as opposed to CCC, is that the cloned drive will have exactly the same name as the original, which confuses the OS

5. I've done that a number of times.

Though I used SuperDuper. I did it with my old PowerMac G5, and when I got my Mac Pro last year, the first thing I did was install a new 1T drive and copy the 320Gb drive to the 1T drive using SuperDuper, and stash the original drive away for safe keeping.

You're right, it's very easy to do.

6. CCC is a pretty good app. I haven't had trouble with TM either.
