I bought my first NEW computer.
For years I've congratulated myself on being shrewd enough to buy used.

My last such purchase was a dual processor G5 that recently bit the big one after about a year. Up til then I had averaged more than two years service out of my gently used purchases.

The problem I realize is that there is no odometer on computers. There's just now telling how many hours of service a refurbished model has ground out.

So, I went to the Apple store and shelled out for a 3.06GHz dual core iMac.

So far, so good. Data migration was a breeze (thanks Steve) due to the fact that I had weekly Carbon Copy Cloner backups to a separate drive.

I am having a random issue with my internet connection timing out, but I haven't had the time to work on that yet.

Initial reactions: Browsing is much faster probably due to more RAM and faster bus speed...this baby is very quiet compared to the G5 tower (the fans on that thing sometimes sounded like an F-16 spinning up)

I'll see how it handles Logic and Digital Performer tomorrow.

1. Hope you like it. I've had good luck with my Macs.
I bought my first consumer level Mac, the Mac Mini. It's been solid as a rock.

2. This is my fifth Mac.
Life's too short to be futzing around with a PC when there's work to be done.

5. An iPad is on my "Want It, But Can't Justify Buying It...Yet" list.
I'm working toward getting this puppy right now.

6. Mixers, amps, new strings, and mic stands were part of my
life for many years. My wife was a musician.

She's now burned out, bummed out and completely over that part of her life. She lived and worked in Nashville, had some success, but got tired of all the BS. Her producer left Nashville with his boyfriend, leaving her with no champion. The final straw was a friend stole the hook from one of her songs and made a hit with it.

7. I agree...
I work in flight simulation. Unix and Sun used to be the big boys on the block. Never had to piss with the computers at all, they just ran and rarely needed a reboot. My industry is moving to PC's due to cheaper hardware. Something I tell my guys about the PC sims- "reboot them every day, or you are going to reboot them every day" (and, of course, at the most inconvenient times). I really like how Microsoft has dealt with the "Blue Screen of Death" jokes- they made the screen green. Will they ever get memory management right? My iMac- last time I rebooted was a month ago, and only because I did a software update.

3. Once you go Mac, you never go back
I'm surprised you have your internet timing out on iMac. This is a problem on Macbooks running on battery, but nothing related to when it's plugged in to a power source.
