I'm having problems
with Safari - every time I go there it shuts down, I emptied my cache and tried to reload but my computer won't let me. No problem with Firefox.

Anyone have suggestions?

4. Whenever I use Safari
it quits - sometimes Itunes quits also

I updated the latest version of Safari and - not sure of what version of osx, but it is recent since I just had a new hard drive installed.

I am not computer savvy -

7. No worries.
:hi:

Do you have any extensions running?

I started having problems when I added some extensions to Safari. I ended up turning them off in the Preferences menu.

8. No extensions
The night before - no problems with Safari but in the morning Safari did not work. I did notice at one time there was a large silver bar going through my home page - I don't know what that may be a corrupt Safari?

9. If you haven't rebooted your mac recently, try that first: in my experience,

rebooting often solves problems

To actually get specific help from anybody you'll need some info:

Also click the apple in the menu bar, click About This Mac, and note on the pop-up window what version of OS X you're running (e.g. Version 10.5.1)
Also go to Applications, right click Safari, click Get Info in the pop-up menu, and then note under General on the pop-up window what version of Safari you're running (e.g. Version 5.0.1). You may need to click the triangle beside General to display the general info

If you're not using the latest OS X version 10.6.5 (?) consider updating OS X
If you're not using the latest Safari version 5.0.3 (?) consider updating Safari

Another natural guess might be that Flash is causing you problems. If you have the latest Flash, you might try this:

... Delete the Flash Player Cache Folder in your "Home Directory" ...
Library > Caches > Adobe > Flash Player ...
After restarting Safari 5, Flash recreates the Flash cache folder ... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11672709?

I verified that if I delete the Flash Player folder in Home > Library > Caches > Adobe, Safari will recreate it on launch

10. Some other things you could try
Edited on Sat Dec-04-10 01:10 PM by struggle4progress
... create a new user and log in as that user and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, try going to your home folder/Library/Preferences and dragging com.apple.Safari.plist to the desktop log out and back in and see if that works. If it does work in the other user try uninstalling and reinstalling Safari. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2670146&tstart=60

... If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
history.plist
lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.) ... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2671506&tstart=15

I've checked that com.apple.Safari.plist and the files history.plist and lastsession.plist are recreated on relaunch of Safari. I think some of the other suggestions in the second link might lose your bookmarks or cookies that you use to stay logged into sites

If the problem persists in a new user account, here's a suggestion from the Apple forums:

... Since the problem exists in more than one account install the 10.6.5 Combo update available here. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 The combo update, not always but in some cases, may help when an app is freezing or crashing ... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2671668&tstart=15

... Install the v10.6.5 Combo Update . Then repair permissions. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. If you see any warnings re: SUID messages, they can be safely ignored, information here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
 ... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2672073&tstart=0
